Fubar Vietnam is still very much a WIP, but it is coming along at a steady pace and has been a lot of fun to play so far.
Be certain you have the latest version if you want to give it a go.

Comments & suggestions on this little 'Nam project are most welcome!

The draft of the Third Edition of the FUBAR Core Rules has now been put up on the Yahoo Group for review.

This includes heaps of work by the Forge of War development team and we hope will represent the 'final' version for quite a while.

We intend to publish this on the Blog within a week or so.

Cheers,
Craig.

Thanks, Craig, this is a nice thing to read, congratulations on keeping it to one page, still.  o_o

As Peter Pig says,

It is worthy of note that it is more difficult to write simple rules that reflect a period in history than to write complex ones.

Activation: Walk.  I still think that green troops would be panicky and rushing, so they should fire at the start or end of a move.

Activation: Second Failed roll: By a full move, do you mean a run of 12"?

Cover: The start might be better written as "At least half of a unit has to be............."

Hope this helps,

John

Hi John,

I have answered this in the Yahoo Group, but many people here can't see that so here I go again:

> Activation: Walk. I still think that green troops would be panicky and
rushing, so they should fire at the start or end of a move.

Green troops are often not panicky. They can be quite confident in their
abilities as they have not yet seen the elephant.

They already suffer from poor activation and especially expertise (which would
affect their shooting) so I don't see any advantage in penalizing them further.

> Activation: Second Failed roll: By a full move, do you mean a run of 12"?

Good point, I meant a Walk move. Rewording goes:
"If they fail again they must withdraw a walk move..."

> Cover: The start might be better written as "At least half of a unit has to
be............."

I like that - done.

Cheers,
Craig.

Thanks, Craig.

These rules look really good now.  They are simple and highly adaptable and a major change from the heavy wargaming tomes that everyone has sold me in the last two years, much of which I doubt I will ever read.

Abhorsen, then you should! It could not be easier to get involved in any of Craig's projects. I was heavily involved in Forge of War development and now less so in FUBAR due to other obligations. But even being minimally involved I have still had a chance to get some ideas into the mix. The fallback business in the new 3.0 version was something I proposed not long ago. I was really thrilled to see it included.

All you really have to do to get involved is 1) join the Yahoo group and 2) either start playtesting and offering feedback or 3) write and submit your own stuff! One of the awesome things about being involved in a Craig Cartmell project is that he does not keep tight reigns on devepment and does not treat it like his own sacred cow. He is very supportive of people writing their own versions for their own purposes, and often bits from those versions get folded back into the original. The group that is currently involved is also just great-very energetic and welcoming of new ideas. I don't get any sense of testiness or propietary thinking with them either.

Bottom line-just jump in! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Remind me again - what is the average force and/or unit size for which the basic rules are written?

Hi Froggy,

These are what I call Small Unit Action rules. Bigger than skirmish but smaller than battle.

In games I have run we have had an average of 3-4 units of up to eight-ten figures each, and occasionally a vehicle on each side.  Some of the guys report they have had games with as many as eight units per side quite happily.

The scale is one figure = one man, so in modern terms we are talking about one or two platoons per side, each with 2-4 squads.

Because of FUBAR's stripped down mechanics it flows quite quickly with over twenty turns easily possible in just a couple of hours. And as units get wiped out, or withdraw damaged, it get's quicker. As a result it does also suit multiplayer games [i.e. 3-6 players].

I hope that helps.

Cheers,
Craig.

Applied for membership just now. The more I think about the basic rules, the more I like them, especially for moderated or scenario-driven games.

I quite agree. They really call out for this sort of fun play.
