VSF Captain Nemo
« on: October 30, 2010, 10:17:37 PM »
I have wanted to try this idea for a while.
I am thinking of building a new army for VSF. The idea is based very roughly on Captain Nemo. A bit of a mix between the Disney version and the LOEG version.
I was going to do it all myself but my Brother expressed an interest in a similar army, so it is going to be a joint effort. With no real plan or dead line. We both have a load of ideas and you may have seen my brothers start to the theme.
One of the things I wanted to have were some divers, Disney Nemo style.

Built a dolly out of wire.

Helmet made out of a wooden bead and some bits and pieces.

Added some green stuff

Start to bulk out the body

Copplestone Russian sailor for scale.

Still got to bulk the arms and legs out a bit and try and add some more detail to the diving suit.
Not sure what to arm him with?
Any suggestions would be most welcome

There is the gun in this picture but it looks a bit too complicated to make.

Nice work so far - I especially like the helmet, that's smashing.

As the undersea henchmen of a crazed techno-pirate, pretty much by definition they have to have some kind of harpoon-gun, don't they? The spear-gun that Andym drew for the mini sub looks perfect - all you have to do is make a series of tiny ones the same (but with some kind of release and a grip, obviously) for hand-held versions, I figure.

Go on, you know it would look great.

Yes indeed, he is truly talented. ;D

I have also fancied doing Nemo's crew. I purchased some of the Scheltrum divers. They have a mixture of spear guns and lances. I think they are a must.

You might find this link useful. Scroll down to the bottom and there are various harpoon weapons.

Are you going to get them cast?

There's no stopping him  :o  ;D  :D  :-*  :-*  :-*

Love it  :)

One small thing though, he does look a little bit tall, I know he's going to be bulked out but the helmet seems to sit a bit taller than the sailor next to him.

Is there no end to your talents! That helmet looks great to me, looking forward to seeing the figure completed.  :-*  :-*

As Malamute said, will you get them casted?
Don't!

I notice you put a laughing icon after that, quite right it is hardly sculpting. I am cheating by putting a big helmet over the hard bits lol

Malamute
Very nice link. Some great ideas but look a little too detailed for my meager skills.

As for getting them cast we will see how they turn out before I start thinking about that.

James
I agree he does look a little tall. I think he will look better when thickened out a bit. I also figure that with the big helmet he would be taller then a normal guy.
This is also a first attempt so we will see how it looks when finished.

I do admire the way you take a few bits and bobs and turn them into soemthing feasible!   8)

He is taller but methinks that's okay as, what with the helmet, don't those diver's boots have really thick soles?

Looks pretty fantastic for a first effort, still needs a little work, tidying him up but there is loads of potential there. Is there no end to your talents man? Well if this thread is half as good as your Zeppelin thread it'll be a corker. Can't wait to see more.

I put that there as I remembered you saying something very similar  ;)

The wood and plasticard negate any chance of press moulding it but apart from a couple of tricky undercuts I cannot see any reason why it could not be cast in a two part RTV

What's RTV?
Any idea how much this sort of thing costs?

Room Temperature Vulcanising silicone rubber as can be used to make moulds.  There are various types, though if casting metal then you need one that can take the high temperatures, namely RTV101.  It's the red stuff in this image (from my New York Independents thread here).

I asked about sources when I was searching out rubber for my project and talk about prices in this thread:

One thing to bear in mind is that while it's cheaper to buy in bulk, shelf life isn't for ever, I think up to about 6 months depending on environment.

If you want them cast professionally then Griffin Moulds are probably your first port of call.
£50 for a master mould and then another £50 - £80 for your production mould if you chose to sell them.  Depending on the size of the mould you can fit up to 16 figures. Plus the cost of the metal.
Let me know if you need any more info.
