Are water filters really full of rivets?

I'm looking for rivets to add to future projects. I remember reading that water filters contain "millions" of them (thousands would be ok with me) (Well actually not rivets but little balls)
I cannot relocate this web-article but  I remember they were talking of a brand called "Boots".  This seems like a typical british brand. Right here the waterfilter brand appears to be "Brita". Anyone has experience with this brand of filter? Does it make your coffee taste better and more importantly does it contain millions of balls as well?

as sorting a million balls by their size and cutting them in half is rather tiresome

You don't have to cut them in half. A slightly easier (if still tedious) way to do it is to drill little tiny, shallow receiving holes in the right place and then just tack the balls in situ. It'll give a slightly stronger bond aswell.

Although I was really looking forward to opening a filter (can't be a miilion can it, must be sure, must.. ) the beads (halbperlen) are probably more convenient. Excellent! Thanks.
