Even better 500 pages with detail pictures of flags uniforms and weapons etc, just need to translate into English
Just need to Translate polish flag infomation into English ?
please note this book is the same size as the new hardback GW warhammer book.
The cost of the books was £30 and the UPs was £29, but each book is well worth £30 for the information

First of all.
Congratulations with your new books.
Both are really worth their price and the troubles getting them.
The colour is in reality red-yellow, the white comes from aging.
I will put up some drawings of the flag in the original colours.
The colour was worn into battle, as you can see from other pictures in the book.
The Polish text says: Colour of the 2nd Regiment Rifles WP (2. Infantry Regiment from Greater Poland - the then Poznan State) - averse and reverse (front and back). And given by, date and by whom.

What books?  I am off to Warsaw in January to do a bit of balck powder and lead ball firing with my Polish re-enactor mates, so will track down this book if I can find it
"...and as always, we are dealing with strange forces far beyond our comprehension...."

All limitations are self imposed.  Work hard and dream big.

Do you want a small list of good books on the subject "Polish Army 1920" still to buy, or just the two books already mentioned on this site?

The Polish text says: Colour of the 2nd Regiment Rifles WP (2. Infantry Regiment from Greater Poland.

2nd Greater Poland Rifle Regiment, being the 56th Infantry Regiment in the Polish Army?

Why would Poles have red and yellow? Red and white is what I usually associate with Poland.

You want to know what the text on the flag says or the text below the flag?

Flag says "With God for fatherland".

"Virtuti Militari" is the oldest military order in Poland, founded 1792 by the last king of Poland. IIRC it is also the oldest military order in the world.

Text below the picture says it belonged to the 2nd regiment of riflemen from Greater Poland (central region), part of the 56th infantry, handed over to the unit in 1920 by an organisation or fund called "Ziema Wielkopolska"/ Land of Greater Poland. It also says that both pictures are indeed the same flag, front and back.

Hope this helps.

Here are some of the Poznan flags.

Mark is correct.
The official flag 1919 is red/white with gold leaves, but those carried in the war were somewhat different. Most seems to have been Polish red with the white eagle and some further local inspiration.
Very few Polish regiments received their official flag before the war ended.
The flags carried in the war, those were flags presented and made by local communities, organizations, national groups and such. And such "home-made" flags were more often just presented to the first passing unit, not to a special local raised regiment.
All such "local flags" were around 1921 handed over to the Military Museum in Warsaw.
In the Poznan flags can be seen German influence and white eagle. On the Galician flags it is the Black Madonna and so on.
It seems, there is no published work on the many pre. 1919 used flags, later handed over to the Museum in Warsaw.

Looking forward to the list. I found a couple good books during my recent visit to Poland, too. I just wish there were plans to translate the book into English.  :(

Wielkopolski = from Greater Poland, a central region of Poland.
pulk = regiment
strzelcow = riflemen
piechoty = infantry
Choragiew = banner

 :)

All banners so far are from the same region, Greater Poland.

The top red/yellow is the banner of a Uhlan regiment, was handed to the regiment in 1919 as a gift by a lady called Janina from some small town. The text on the flag says "Under your protection we flee", it is meant as when they flee they would go to virgin Mary for protection.

The red/black banner is from 1st Greater Poland engineer batalion, handed over to them in 1919, funded by the local Red Cross. The text on the flag says "So help us God".
