Star Wars ships in a vaguely compatible scale
« on: January 15, 2011, 08:26:18 PM »
right... what I'm trying to do is compile a list of the various Star Wars ships from whatever ranges are available that look the right relative sizes together... roughly, not exactly, but roughly...

so, an Imperial Shuttle is roughly the same length as Slave 1, both are roughly 4/5 the length of the Falcon
the Falcon could be roughly either a quarter or half the size of a Rebel Transport (depending on the website you read)
a Rebel Transport should be roughly half the size of a Blockade Runner
a Blockade Runner should be roughly half the size of the Nebulon B, and should be a tenth of the size of a Star Destroyer
a Nebulon B should be roughly a quarter the size of an MC80, roughly a fifth the size of a Star Destroyer and roughly half the size of an Interdictor
an MC80 should be slightly smaller than a Star Destroyer

I'm not concerned with fighters, because they'll be way out and I have an idea there anyway... nor is the Viscount Defender or SSD Executor viable on a table...

for no real reason, I'm primarily looking at ships from the PC game Star Wars Supremacy mainly as I enjoyed that, with a couple of others as well... if any others come to mind as you have them (again capital class), feel free to add them to the list... if you have a make I've not initially listed, again, feel free to add them to the list (Odyssey Slipways springs to mind)...

just quote the last message and add to it if you are able...

cheers...

I've got a lot of the roleplaying game source books that have pretty much all of the original ships in them with stats etc.

I can post what there is if you like (but not now 'cos it's really late  lol )

no... it's not stats I'm after... I want to know how long the models from various sources are so I can see if it's possible to get a blockade runner in scale with a nebulon B and in scale with a star destroyer... I know some resin kit ranges are consistant, but toys/model kits are cheaper...

What I did was buy everything Odyssey Slipways does in 1:10000 scale, and the then get the fighters (+ shuttles and not-Millenium Falcon) from Studio Bergström's Fleet scale ranges. The fighters will be much too big (I am not sure what scale they are but maybe around 1:2500? Someone surely knows better here?) but they're pretty tiny as they are...if they were any smaller, they'd be just tiny points. So I am happy with this arrangement, as it looks ok on the board.

What has slowed me down is how to base these things, they can be bought with silicone hex bases which are 'gummy' and flexible, so you can stick pins in them (on which the fighters are glued) and arrange the fighters on the bases and even remove them without leaving any mark on the base. However, when I bought the bases, I didn't realise they were light turquoise and pink in colour, and they don't take paint (due to the silicone), so I thought they'd look a bit wonky. The owner of Studio Bergström promised to look into getting some bases in grey/black, but I haven't since checked back to see, if anything came out of this?

Anyways, I am still looking for good transports etc. I think the medium sized one could be in in the same scale as the fleet fighters, as they're nearer to their class anyways? But so far all the only model I know of is the collectable ships (WOC?) one which is pretty big (out of scale for both types, I think?)

I have also bought some other space ships that aren't based on the SW universe. I hope to use these as pirates/non-aligned system forces. I particularly liked the ones made by Ninja Magic (bought via Rattlehead Games). Their Hyperdyne and Jun-ila ranges have ships that look perfect as Star Wars ships, maybe some archaic Republic era ships? There's even on big hammer-head style ship similar to the Corellian Corvettes which might have come from the same Shipyard, and some nice and big transporters. Recommend these highly!

I might end up basing all my ships with Litko acrylic bases, I am still on the fence on that issue. Any suggestions? For the bigger ships, a sufficiently large base is called for, I think.

So far I have resisted ordering the Super Star Destroyer in 1:50000.... It would be pretty freaking big even if it is in much smaller scale.

PS. I can provide piccies of the ships I have, if that's any help? They're unpainted of course, but should give an idea of sizes.

This any good? Don't know if you've got it as it has been posted before:

http://www.starshipmodeler.com/starwars/swars_scales.cfm

Unfortunately no hyperlinks to the companies supplying them, there is a retailers a-z but takes time to trawl.

His pics might be helpful.

I guess so, but are they that that much more expensive? I don't know how much the Micromachines etc. go for on the eBay for example? Some auctions might cost a bit, and there's not telling if you will be able to find the model you seek in reasonable time, and so on. With OS you know what you get (provided they're available at the time), and the scale is constant etc.

How many ships are you looking to get, by the way? Just a few capital ships etc, or a proper fleets for both sides?

right, have lumped each ship into scale order so it's easier to find similarly scaled stuff to use...

Star Destroyer Studio Bergstrom (Ascendancy) 1/14545 as an Imperial Class
Star Destroyer De Agostini  1/14679 as an Imperial Class
Star Destroyer FToys   1/15000 as an Imperial Class
Home One Micromachine  1/16369

MC85 Studio Bergstrom 1/23333
Star Destroyer Studio Bergstrom (Vanquisher) 1/25714 as a Victory Class
Star Destroyer Micromachine  1/239294 as an Imperial Class

a note on the Star Destroyer, that is scaled to an Imperial class destroyer at 1600m, a Victory class is 900m and so you could use a smaller one for that.

now need to add the resin/plastic kits out there, so if anyone has them, please pitch in...

and still looking for:
Millenium Falcon Titanium
Millenium Falcon Starship Battles
Republic Cruiser/Corellian Gunship Starship Battles
Imperial Shuttle Starship Battles
Slave 1 Titanium
Imperial Interdictor Starship Battles

the other stuff from the PC game I think I've seen in resin:
Rebel Fighter Carrier
Lancer Frigate
Imperial Fighter Carrier

EDIT: anyone know how long the Studio Bergstrom Falcon is, I assume 1/20000 but want to check as it's part of the fighter range, which doesn't match the capital ships.
