Artizan Police as Victorian Bobbies
« on: March 11, 2011, 08:27:07 PM »
I know that Artizan's coppers are decked out in 1930s garb, but would they at a pinch do for a late Victorian setting (is there, indeed, much difference between the uniforms of these two periods?)?  With this in mind, how do they compare to the Westwind 'London Bobbies' miniatures?  Can the two be mixed comfortably?  Any help on this matter will be most graciously received.

I think you'd get away with it, theres a great similarity. And they're lovely figures, the boy slug has just finished half a dozen for VBCW.

Oddly enough there's few folks who know any developments in police uniforms, unlike military ones, I even know coppers who couldn't tell you that, but know the tunic button rules for various guards regts.  ::)

I'd suggest that first batch is earlier than Victorian... the Met and other city forces started using the custodian (pith) helmet in the 1860s.

Here's some Victorian cops from Manchester:

The Westwind ones are nice, great lip weasels.

Perhaps have a look at these links:

Thanks chaps.  I've seen the Design28 minis before and have to agree with 6mil that they're a bit too early for my purposes (I've just recently ordered the Westwind Bobbies, y'see).  Those links are very informative, thanks Phil.  I've actually since found a picture of the two ranges - Westwind and Artizan - together using a Google image search ('Westwind Bobbies') and they actually seem to gel very well indeed so it looks like I'm on!  Thanks again.

Natal Police Carabineers might suit as armed police, the foot figures anyway with some work on the trouser legs.
Cheers,

Funghy, I've got the Westwind and Artizan coppers. Bear with me and I'll take a comparison picture for you.
Don't!

That would be very useful indeed TC!

Here you go fella. Apologies for the quality of the pic but I was rather rushed. The Westwind bobby on the right is still WIP, bearing in mind the different base sizes they are certainly compatible. The only real difference is some uniform detail.

Very helpful, ta!  Looks like I'll be able to get away with it then.

ironclad Miniatures do a nice pack of Victorian police in capes with revolvers. They are slightly taller than Westwind, but are nice figures, another possibility for you.

Hadn't seen those before, thanks Malamute.  There appears to be more miniatures options for Victorian Bobbies than I at first realised!  Just received my Bobbies and Detectives from Westwind this morning.  I have to say I was surprised by the amount of flash on 'em, but they cleaned up nicely.  I'm currently in the process of basing them (this involves rolling individual cobblestones from Milliput and so is tedium itself!).

I came across these at WMMS (picture at bottom of page). There's monted police too!

http://reivercasting.wordpress.com/1938-a-very-british-civil-war-28mm/

They aren't very detailed so fairly generic. I bought a pack and they are only slightly smaller than Artizan and Westwind. The Ironclad coppers are lovely but tower over the others.
