Wish this giant was still available .....

Ironwind metals just had a kickstarter a while ago aimed at bringing back classic sculpts. They had giants on the list, but sadly didn't get to them.  Possibly with better options for eu, they might have gotten further.  Still though, I have good hopes of these models returning to the market.

Similarly, it would be great it if mirliton miniatures got around to bringing more of the grenadier dragon lords back.
Why aim for gold if you can get lead?

Why?  I assume you mean in production as he remains available on the second hand market. Re-releases are usually made with an inferior alloy, cast with less skill and with a price tag three to four times what the street price of an original casting is. And this guy is far from rare. I don't think I paid more than $10 if that for my casting and you can probably guess how much it would cost new today. Ral Partha lead castings from the 80s, along with Grenadier, Metal Magic and others are equaled only occasionally these days. Just lurk on ebay more.

I love the giant! Great job on this one Alex :)
Gorgeous work on the giant and the rest of the thread. I agree those old sculpts are very colourful and the style is wonderful
Beautiful painting & visual storytelling!
Splendid paintjob on that giant! Love that guy. By coincidence I started painting my own casting of him earlier this year (and he's joined the hordes of the half-painted).
Oh, Alex, this is wonderful. Lovely brushwork, well done to you.
This is a fantastic thread!

Thanks, Helen, thanks guys, highly appreciate your kind words :)

Yes, I've found him on Ebay some years ago, he appears there from time to time quite regularly. I can't remember exactly what I paid, but it wasn't that much (compared to some other oldies), I think something about 20-25 pounds.

Completly forgot to say you did a great job prof.  o_o

I also noticed a change in your style, can you tell what techniques you have applied from the workshop and how much did you like it? I'm getting more and more intrigued with the workshops, especially after seeing the changes in painting style that they sometimes lead to. I.m now watching the dark sword dvds and already love what they do for me.

Thanks, Braxandur!
I liked the MV workshop a lot and I really would highly recommend it to everyone, also to the people who thinks they are already good enough and there is nothing to learn any more. It's a bit too difficult to count all these countless things I've learned but regarding painting techniques it's surely the light theory, much more own mixing of colours, using painting mistakes and involving them into the work on a miniature as nothing happens without reason, also very important - some very useful blending techniques.

And here we go witht the next update!

Since every town in a fantasy world needs some proper catacombs, just to provide an additonal battlefield for the evil guys, their minions and all the would-be-heroes, it’s been a matter of time before Witchtown opened the gates to an own dungeon. Okay, admitted, it also was a financial matter as I’ve been too lazy to build something like that by myself and I had to be patient and to spare some money for the the most beautiful and elaborated Dungeon terrain you can find out there. Of course, I’m talking of Dwarven Forge.

But before we are going to start this dangerous descent into the darkness, I’d like to show you some of my newly painted Otherworld miniatures, I’ve been working on for the last couple of weeks.  The guys are just starting their next quest, certainly looking for a maiden kindnapped by something very mean and very cruel.

Click on this picture to see the bigger version.

Now let’s have some close-ups on them. First one are these great three mercenaries:

Then the paladin and the barbarian (obviously an ageing one):

Another shot with paladin and hirelings:

And now a back shot, the heroes are facing a vampire count. The vampire figure is from Reaper, actually quite old, I’ve painted it in 2002.

Now some shots of the dungeons. I’ve already had some very fun games using the Dwarven Forge stuff and “Trapdoor” rules. It’s just a particular delectation for me to prepare the games, building all sorts of traps and corners, scattering monsters through the floors and looking at the faces of the gamers after revealing another room full of huge and brutal orcs. The Orcs on the picture are by Bob Olley, extremelly well sculpted guys. The little goblin on the left is from Kev Adams, the Goblin king, coming from the Goblin King Court set, made for the Citadel Yahoo group, couple of years ago.

Some Otherworld adventurers again.

A human and an elf fighting Zombies:

Finally also a use for this splendid RAFM troll painted ages ago:

A Dungeon without rats? Impossible!  The creatures are from LAM:

and a final shot, of course, a damsel in distress! The damsel is a Ral Partha figure, the bad guy is Citadel.

Lovely pictures!
I can only hope to get such a nice set-up together some day.  :-*

Those Olley Orcs look quite nice. How do they scale up next to, say Otherworld or Hasslefree minis, and are they still available somewhere?

Absolutely gorgeous all round, Alex!

Some great figure choices in there, mixing the old with the new seamlessly.

You are right, that dungeon is not too rough, is it?

They're rather huge ones. They were available from Olley Armies (http://www.olleysarmies.co.uk/) but it seems they're not more available there, perhaps sold to another company.

oh dear, these square bases are awful  ::) they really need some new basing work

They really would and indeed while painting them I've even thought that they could be a nice addition for your GoT project :)

Lovely stuff.  I don't mind saying I think the Hirelings and Henchmen box is the best Otherworld product.  Lovely stuff.  I put up a host of similar pictures a while back, Dwarven Forge and Otherworld make a nice combination!
