Don't know if any of you are interested in this, but I must say, this is one of the most satisfying purchases I've made in a looooong time.

Star Trek Tactics is the latest release in the Heroclix line.

They have taken 28 ships from all of the movies/series and put them together in a Federation & Klingon fleet.

The game is entirely compatible with Heroclix and the detail on the models is the best I've seen in forever.

Now instead of describing Heroclix as Chess with Superpowers, we can describe it as Chess with Starships!

http://heroclix.com/ has more info.  The 4 maps that come with the starter set are Kobayashi Maru, Wolf 359, Deep Space 9, and the Mutara Nebula.

They will also be releasing a 7 figure Away Team set with all Original Series characters.  I will finally be able to have Captain Kirk, Batman, and the Punisher on the same team!

Live long and prosper,

Faust

To be completely spoddy, there were no "away teams" in 1960s Star Trek; there were "landing parties".

But I'm still looking forward to seeing those.
Back from the dead, almost.

Spod is such a great word. Haven't heard it in ages. Thought it had died out. Thanks, Steve, you brought a smile to my face.

I'm a Yank; please translate 'spod'....

Yes, Landing party is better.  The set will be based on the JJ Abrahms reboot.  But, Kirk is Kirk in any setting! :)

'Spod' is more or less nerd or geek, so 'spoddy' is unnecessarily pedantic about something that other people probably don't care about, or perhaps being very detailed or overcomplicated in an explanation.

He said, in his somewhat spoddy way.

I have been elightened.  We use other less endearing terms for such behavior here in the colonies.  ;)

I've always thought that a spod was a geek among geeks - the kind that other geeks are embarrassed by, who only cares about the minutiae.

Shame that it's the Abrams reboot being used.  The 60s version is the one I like.  Still, they may be similar enough.

To be absolutely clear, a "geek" is a specialist - the term came into the larger language from the cant of the side-shows, where a geek was a performer with a very particular talent or act that they'd spent years perfecting (especially if it was a weird one, like the guy who could pass jewelry chains through his nose out his mouth...). So, you can have "gaming geeks", "literature geeks", "computer geeks", etc.

The term "nerd" is supposed to refer not to a person's interests (or obsessions) but their lack of social skills. It's possible to be a nerd with no associated geekiness, and you occasionally run across geeks who are definitely not nerdy. (Though the tend to become more so when they "geek out" on their chosen subject...)

o_o Or maybe I'm overthinking this whole thing...

BTW, cool spaceships! :D

I unboxed my ships last night.  I have 21 of the 28 in the set.  I bought two counter displays and the starter.

I had more Federation ships than Klingon Empire.  The details are fantastic!  Itty bitty decals for hull numbers, the whole thing.  They are really quite awesome.

I have about a 50/50 mix of Original Series/Movies to Next Gen/DS9/Voyager ships.  One of the most satisfying purchases I've made in a loooong time.

My first thought was "Star Trek Tactics?  Like, 'Send the red shirts in first' type tactics?"

Gracias,
