Battle in a Box
« on: 24 February 2012, 12:28:17 PM »
I played a sweet little game the other day. It was a small "Songs of Drums and Shakos"-game just 200 points per side. Took us just an hour. Enough time left for wine and tasty cheese...
We played at a friends home and I took all what was needed with me. But it took me hours to decide what to game, to collect the stuff of the different shelfes, get the stats ready and so on.

So I thought it would be a good idea, to have anything for a small pickup game at the ready: everything in a box.
Miniatures, rules, dice, scenery...

And so I am  "transport-gamer" I wanted all transportable.
I made the playingsurface of 1,5mm-plasticcard and used some Renedra-stuff to fill the field...
Size: 18"x25".

I like the Renedra things: fences, tents, the gravestones. Very durable and not to much weight.

Scratchbuild graveyard. The walls turned out to thin... :?

All the things for the box.

...some space left.

A great concept, one that could also be applies to all hobby-related stuff, it would help storing all these wargaming projects. I try to realize every project I start in a way that it fits in a big box too, but somehow I never have any boxes big enough when I'm finished  8)

Yes, I do store all my projects in these white boxes.
I do mainly skirmish-things. But when I do something bigger, I use one box for cavalary and on for infantry and so on...

It's a shame you can't get them anymore at IKEA, at least in Germany.

Really great concept. Care to explain in a little more detail how you made your playing boards?

that is a great idea. I have started building scnery with lift off roofs so that I can get my models inside, but then building other buildings and scenery small enough to fit inside too, like a 'russian doll', which makes storage easier.

Took us just an hour. Enough time left for wine and tasty cheese...

That is SO european, and sound much nicer that a pizza.  ;)

Tsk...tsk..what about the bacon sandwich tradition Rob?

ON-TOPIC: nice idea and a great storage solution for a lot of different projects. Very neat in every sense.

That is really cool.  :-*
Nice board, even for one that's not meant to be compact.

Thanx all ogether... :)

@marine
The game was very tight. The numbers of the spanish where frightening the french at first but a bold grenadier got in the melee alone and killed a few of my man. Then he stood in front of my officer but fumbled twice so I was lucky enough to kill him with a 6:1-shot. From this point on the moral ofthe french were broken and they fumbled once more, unable to reload. While my brave fuisiliers shot two more voltigeurs. After that the remaining french withdraw... :D

@aaron
I just apply some acryl-paste with my fingers to the plasticcard (to get some structuire) and then paint it (cheap acrylic paint from the diy-store), with some additional drybrushing. Not much mystery here. After its dry some static grass is added... :)

@rob
Did you have a look at my desert town? I builded this kind of "russian doll"-thing before and I am quite pleased with it, transpotaionwise:

Thanks for the explanation of the boards. I'm guessing the plastic you are using is thick enough that it doesn't flex much. In my limited experience with trying to do something similar I had the spackling compound simply peel off the plastic when I accidentally flexed it picking it up.
