Wow ok i've finished glue the tarps on the market stalls (pics later)... Blooming heck I think that i almost glued the stalls to my hands several times. Plus it uses lots of glue... Thank you poundland!

Huh.... I guess I would have to try and find a larger amount then? I can't imagine doing those roofs with those little needle-nosed tubes.

Progress update.

I've now more or less finished all the adobes that are going to appear on the table- this has involved making three new ones; a blacksmiths (still to add some detailing), a middle class adobe, and finally as workers union/Stevedore/Teamsters building.

The layout. As can be seen by the picture, the new buildings need textured.

The blacksmiths can be seen here on the left hand side. It's pretty basic just now. I think I might put a low adobe wall around it. Also the large window will sever as a hatch through which the blacksmith will see finished products. Now just to find a middle eastern blacksmith model.

The Stevedores building. I quite enjoyed planning this one. And the arches where surprisingly fun to do.

Sorry for the blurry photo. The results of Malamute's recommended superglue method for the market stalls. Over all I'm happy with the result. Also I've go some more bric-a-brack coming from ainsty to fill the market place with.

The window arrived from jimbibbly (thank you again jim!) It looks fantastic!



Ok so still quite a bit to do. I've drafted up a to do list, I hope to keep on track with it.

To Do
Finish texturing the adobes (Sun)
Painting the adobes (Sun/Mon)
Last minute detailing on adobes (i.e. shutters, doors etc) (Tues/Wed)
Texturing the board (Next Sun)

Now all they are waiting for is to dry, followed by a white dry brush. Wow what a way to spend an afternoon.

It has to be the ultimate pulp building in a way... Just imagine how you could expand it and include characters from prior adventures in to it on display as you go along.

Its only stage 1 of the painting... The next stage which I'm in the middle of is the longest; I'm currently drybrushing. It looks as though it's going to take a couple of coats...

First off, I hope people don't mind the excessive posting of pictures. I love it when people document their progress so I'm going to do the same thing.

I had a work related meeting today that when on forever. So I didn't start painting until about 6.30. So for the past three hours or so I'd been dry brushing voraciously.

The pictures that I'm about to post are very rough and ready. But I'm happy to post them because 1) people make adobes look so unbelievably easy, when I find them surprisingly difficult and 2) I really would like some critique/hints and tips.

Ok so first up is an overview just so you can see what I've accomplished in three hours

Plus from afar it actually looks ok 

However closer up they definitely fail

The transition between colours isn't as smooth or as nice as some others that I've seen (especially you Mr Malamute). I'm wondering it I should have used 3 colours instead of the two I've used. I may also have been a little (just a smidgen) over zealous with the drybrushing. hmmm.

Please advice and tips are desperately needed!

Actually an idea hit me, and after some remedial dry brushing I produced this:




It seems to break up the mass of white, and gives the adobe a slightly dirtier 'lived in' look to it. What do y'all think?

Andy, they don't look half bad, once you add things like doors and window frames, some grass tufts etc plus little scenic bits they will come alive.

 I use four colours. The first is the base colour in my case a dark sand colour similar to yours.

The first thing I would do with yours is add a wash around the bit where the walls meet the base. I use thinned burnt umber acrylic from a tube along the base of the walls where they meet the earth base. If you  look at photos of adobe buildings  you will see this as it shows where dirt etc and perhaps damp discolours the walls.

Then I add a mid tone lighter colour like the old GW Bleached Bone working from the roof downward, with heavier brushwork at the roof less towards the bottom of the walls leaving a gap so the base colour shows through between the bleached bone and the burnt umber wash.

Then finally a white/off white wet brush again starting at the top working down but leaving the bleached bone visible in the middle.

So  you have:

White near the roof.
Bleached bone in the middle
Base colour near the bottom
Burnt umber wash around the base.

A bit of blending in between each layer and there is your basic adobe recipe. I hope that helps. I some WIP shots somewhere to better explain my method somewhere in my gallery. I'll see if I can find them for you.
