French wars of religion
« on: April 17, 2012, 11:47:41 PM »
Just thinking ahead on this one but would ECW figures suffice for this (thinking 'The Four Musketeers' with Olly Reed), if not, what would be suitable?

Oh yeah, 28mm of course  :)

cheers

ECW is far too late. FWoR is Elizabethan era.

True that the main phases of The French Wars of Religion took place in the second half of the C16th, but the after effects and mopping up operations rumbled on for another 100 years, until the final mass emigration of the Huguenots (French Protestants) at the end of the C17th, following the persecutions of Louis XIV. The phase of the wars that provides the backdrop for The Three Musketeers, including the siege of the fortified Protestant city of La Rochelle (1622), is absolutely contemporary with the early part of the Thirty Years War, so i would have thought TYW / ECW figures would serve perfectly well if this is the phase of the conflict you're talking about representing.

Brigade Games do a nice range of musketeers and assorted swashbucklers (by Mr Hicks).
Redoubt do as well, although they're nearer 35mm than 28mm.
Blue Moon do a set as well, but haven't seen them in the flesh, so can't really comment.

I've been wanting to do the earlier part of the dutch revolt which is nearly contemporary. I've been using the Foundry swashbucklers range for pike and shot (dutch, english, scots etc). The reiters that you'll obviously need are for the most part the old metal citadel pistoliers but you could use nearly any armoured cavalry with a pistol just make sure they are not fully armoured so you might want to look at some of the border reiver ranges. I'm going to be using a mix of Gamezone figures, old GW pirazzo lost legion, old GW estalians, and Emil Horky's bohemians as spanish. I'm still trying to find suitable lancer cavalry for the spanish. As far as Landsnkechts are concerned, you have two choices. Go with the Old Glory range for the historically correct look (I don't like them myself) or go with artizan or foundry and use slightly earlier styles. For Gendarmes you could probably use the Foundry or Eureka gendarmes and they wouldn't be out of date.

TYW and ECW figures would be fine for the Fronde, though, if you just want to bash pike and shot Frenchmen against each other.
Back from the dead, almost.

Thanks for the replies chaps  :)

I'm actually thinking about the seige of La Rochelle as there would appear to be lots of smaller actions/skirmishes and the like. I also like the haphazard look of the troops that took part (both sides).

cheers

The Old Glory range is not that bad even if they are big.

suitable lancer cavalry for the spanish

Essex has nice Spanish lancers in armour that are sculpted by Aly Morrison many years ago
