Lost Continent Terrain Project Begins...
« on: June 18, 2012, 12:43:48 PM »
Hi All!

Started my new table today. First up: Rivers.

Going for cellophane water this time – looks amazing if you get it right!

Hi Bezzo! Quick off the mark as ever!

The table will be made from at least three boards 900mm x 1200mm, double sided with river/water on one side and plain grassland on the other. I may not use them all, all the time, but I plan to build a great many set-pieces to drop on for variety.

This sort of game (GASLIGHT / SPACE 1889, etc.) requires flexibility, whereas I built Leadwood as a permanently set town because gunfight rules don't need a constantly changing landscape.

I hope there will be cliffs, ruins, jungles, waterfalls, rope bridges... you name it!

Stunning.

It's a bit hard to see from your blog, but are your bank pieces literally just laid on top of the loose cellophane? Any particular tips on this?

Hi Oxiana.

Thanks.

At this stage, the pieces are just laid over the cellophane. However, I plan to stretch and glue the cellophane sheet down (making sure the glued edges will be hidden under the riverbanks pieces) whereupon I will also glue down the riverbanks and use DAS, filler, glue, sand, etc to blend the two together. It is important that the visible cellophane 'water' is just sitting in place - all paint, etc must be absolutely dry before applying the cellophane, or you lose the illusion of fluidity and depth.

Keep watching to see if I get it right! Fingers crossed!

Excellent work sir, as always. I use cellophane for my rivers especially when I want wide rivers. I found also that you can make it look deeper by adding another piece under the first. But then you probably already know that. I really enjoy your projects!

Has Ray heard about this?  lol

Hope you like.

Very much!

While Randy's comment about layering is true, you're showing that proper underlying painting helps a strong illusion of depth as well.

Also, on the subject of Randy's veracity, 'I really enjoy your projects!' is an example of understatement. ;->=

Pray continue!

This is just amazing. A revalation! The cellophane looks better than any of the expensive products I've seen before. Thanks for posting this, Colonel. It's opened up a whole world of possibilities.

How do you get that smooth ripple effect in the cellophane?

Thanks, all!

It's very gratifying to get such a response, but I really must tip my hat to the legendary Major General Tremorden Rederring for the cellophane revelation. I discovered it years ago on his page.

I've used it for presentation...

...but this is the biggest practical application I've tried so far. Hope it works out!

As far as the ripples are concerned, they just happen! Awesome, huh?

I'll be posting more on my techniques and discoveries as this piece (and others) progress.

Once again, thanks for the encouragement.

All the Best!

Having been the recipient of more than my share of oblique references, I admit this is a fine one to be saddled with.  :D

Only quandary is, a call for 'more more' may only delay some wondrous mechanical monstrosity. Such delicious indecision for us, Colonel!

Oh I still visit if I fancy a blast of nostalgia but I meant it has not had any input for some years...

It was always a great place to direct those who just couldn't understand what the heck you were up to. Such as when I first heard of same. Even without new additions, it was marvelous, and will be missed! The Major General went on to bigger and better, but he still holds my gratitude.
