I based and primed a ton of stuff a few months ago when the weather was really good. I plan to do the same in a week or so...and hope it will last me through the winter. I know it won't though, because I'm expecting a ton more stuff to arrive. Sedition Wars, the Reaper Bones stuff and now the Mantic Dreadball stuff. I'll need to find some paint-on primer so that I can work on that stuff through the cold, freezing months of Canadian winter. No priming outdoors for me then!

Once Oct/Nov in Florida hits, it gets easier to primer, we are out of the rain seasons as well and the humidity drops. So we have a few nice months until spring...then rain and heat comes back....so we have to stock up at the end of  winter for the spring/summer as days to primer are far and few.

So true.  We've had a ton of rain in Ocala, FL the past few months and my figs are just waiting for a dry day (when I'm not at the office!)

(Reposted in full from my blog at http://obsidian3d.blogspot.ca/2012/09/two-more-supers-join-fray.html)

I finally finished the two figures on my painting table. They'd both been sitting at near-complete for over a week and I just never got a chance to sit down and finished them off. The first figure is a converted Heroclix Wendigo that I'm going to be using as an alternate form for my figure Snowbird.

As far as conversions go this was an easy one. Swap from the clix base over to a 40mm round base, which I added some sand and rocks to. The paint work on the Wendigo was quite good to begin with. I used a quick wash of the Army Painter Strong Tone and followed that up with a dry brushed coat of pure white. I would have preferred a grey wash with a slightly blue tint, but honestly...I'm not sure how to make one. I didn't want to be up all night experimenting with mixing something up, so I went the easy route.

I've got SuperSystem statistic sheets made up for both figures and am looking forward to trying her abilities out in a game. I've already tried using Sasquatch and Guardian so I think the next battle will be a bigger match where I'll field Snowbird, Puck and Shaman. That should be a lot of fun!

Second up is another figure from the Pulp City heroes starter box: Iron Train. Before painting this figure I did some looking around online to find out what kind of colours were used on Canadian steam engines. Black was most definitely the primary colour, along with red. The black isn't actually black, but a mix of metallic, black and a touch of blue that doesn't really show through.

I ended up choosing gold as the third main colour, and in retrospect I think it turnout out a little too ostentatious. Not quite what I'd had in mind. The red is Citadel Red Gore and the gold is Citadel Shining gold. Perhaps a less brilliant gold, or maybe even just a silver / metal colour instead might have been more to my liking. I did try to add a little depth to the whole thing with a light coat of Strong Tone ink, which helped a little bit.

He still looks pretty good though I think and now that I have two figures each from the villains and heroes boxes I can give the rules a test run. I think I'll have a little time this evening to go through a quick battle and see if I can sort the Pulp City rules in my head. Should be fun!

Gray wash with slightly blue tint? Mix some up! Vallejo do a mid gray wash, get a spare dropper bottle and add blue wash to taste. :)

As for the minis, nicely done for the Wendigo and Iron Train.

And if you have any Q's about Pulp City, feel free to PM me.

Thanks for the feedback. I haven't had any luck finding empty dropper bottles locally, but I'm sure I'll end up with an empty one sooner rather than later.

I may have some questions after I try out the rules. I'll be sure to ask if I do.

droppers can be picked up at art supply spots, also cooking places. I have a friend that is a nurse and gives me unused syringes (no needle) that I use also as droppers as you can control the flow.

I've started looking around a figure that will make a good Northstar. I don't like the Heroclix one, but the Aurora is pretty good. I'm open to suggestions for Northstar, whether it's using another clix figure or something else entirely.

In addition, I haven't decided which part of Pulp City starter box models to paint yet...and I'm a little bit worried that the 12 figures missing in the original shipment have been lost. It's been a long time since Nate told me he sent it out. If it doesn't show up, I won't have either of the Solar models (or any of the others, naturally). :( I am hoping at this point that it's simply taking longer than usual. Any votes on the next two Pulp Citizens to paint up?

Reposted from my blog at http://obsidian3d.blogspot.ca/2012/11/pulp-city-starter-boxes-complete.html

Now I do have to admit that I've strayed a little bit (fine...a LOT) since I put out my "What Should I Paint Next?" survey a few months ago, but I haven't forgotten about the Pulp City starter boxes that were chosen by my readers. Yep, that's right...thanks to all three of you out there that voted!

When I received all my Pulp City figures (and rule book) I was really excited. It was a huge box of toys and the price had been a really, really good deal from a fellow over on Lead Adventure Forums. Unfortunately after going through all the figures I found an even dozen of the models that were supposed to be included were not. The cards for the figures were evidence of that. I was told several times that they had been shipped but as of my last inquiry, over a month ago now, I haven't received anything, nor a response to my email. It's a real shame because Nate seemed like a nice guy. However at this point I feel like something not-quite-right went on and that I'll never receive the rest of the figures I paid for.

As a result I suggest extreme caution when dealing with Nate (his user name is Napar on LAF). The dozen figures I didn't receive will cost me over $100 to replace, which truly stinks. It makes the deal go from a great one to only a good one, but accompanied with a very large dose of disappointment, and of course a lot of wariness should I be looking to trade online in the future. More than likely I won't be now, simply because of the risk involved.

One of those missing figures is Solar from the heroes starter box. I have plans to order one directly from the Pulp Monsters guys but haven't done so yet. In the meantime however, I was able to finish work on all of the other great sculpts from both the Heroes Starter Box and the Villains Starter Box. Check them out!

Ace of Wraiths

Red Riding Hoodoo and Loup Garou

Twilight

Guerilla

Nuke

Overall I'm really happy with how they turned out, although the 'burnt / dead grass' thing I was trying for on Nuke's base didn't turn out. I could probably get it to look right with a quick dry brush of brown now though. I know the pictures aren't that great. I'll have to start using my camera instead of my phone to do this...Oh, and I also took a few pictures of the teams for those of you who are interested! Also there a lot more pictures on my photobucket account http://s66.photobucket.com/albums/h248/Obsidian3d/Supers/Pulp%20City/

Heroes Starter (minus Solar as mentioned above)

Villains Starter

As an aside, does anyone know how to quote a blog post? I'd like to simply be able to include the post in my message without having to paste it in and reformat it for the boards. Is that possible?

For the burnt grass for Nuke, take a little brown (or dark grey depends on the look you want) paint, add it to a drybrush and dab it onto the grass area, then hit it with a wash (have to be careful with the wash, a little goes a long way), did this once for my fire elemental and it turned out well....
