T&T in Darkest Africa - the First Visit
« on: August 18, 2012, 08:22:02 PM »
Having owned the rules for a while (at least two years +) we actually got round to playing this afternoon. I had wanted to play the “The Ivory Gauntlet” for sometime, we decided on this as our introduction to the rules.

The Somnambulist played the Big Game Hunter and his entourage and I played the jungle natives.

Lacking suitable river sections (no blue floor tiles at B&Q recently) we laid out the marsh sections with the same restrictions as a river.

Typical set up

The action opened with the game hunter moving cautiously upto the marsh area, in two groups. The native archers began some harassing moves on the Askari group, whilst the native spear group remained hidden.

The hunter and his bearers picked their way through the marsh, only losing one member in the process.

With the askaris keeping the archers busy, the bearers eventually came out the marsh and continued skirting around the fighting, whilst the hunter took a few well aimed shots at the archers.

Victory was in sight for the hunter group, when bursting out of the undergrowth came the native spears, closing for combat and causing chaos in the bearer groups. The big game hunter decided that running away was the better part of courage and legged it off the table.

The majority of the minis were painted by me, with the armed askaris being painted by Xander; scenery by The Somnabulist and myself.

An enjoyable game, with an RCW one waiting in the wings.

Bezzo, thank you, Sir.

Yes - RCW will be in next. All done (including terrain) except for an artillery piece for the Whites  8)

Hello Ramirez,

thanks for posting the report.

With all that plants blocking LOS I immediately thought...."The Big Game Hunter will have a rough time "

Hope you had fun anyway.

Looking for more.

Cheers

Great looking figures.
Love the terrain.
A couple of questions, please.
Were there only two units on each side?
How long did it take to play the game?

Thanks Bjorn,

The "spears" stayed hidden and undetected for quite sometime which rather lulled him into a false sense of security.

Marine0846,

Thanks.

Were there only two units on each side?

The natives had two units ("spears" and "Bows") and the hunter group had three (Hero, Bearers and Askaris) although the heroe attached himself to the bearrer group so then there would be only two units.

How long did it take to play the game?

The game took a couple of hours to play (we are very new to it) and we will be playing again.

I know, basic unit size is 5 and natives look more impressive in large groups but we tried smaller units in our recent games and that was big fun and you had more tactica choices although we played with only 15 to 20 figures per side.

Example...
1 Hero
2 groups of 3 Askaris
1 group of 4 Askaris ( including Leader )
1 group with 2 native scouts
1 group of 5 bearers

1 Hero
1 Shaman - as a scenario feature can fulfill up to three miracle deeds during the game - like improving quality for one round and one unit or close combat modifier or speak a black magic curse on the enemy Hero and and and...  :)
1 group of 4 Bowmen
1 group of 3 musketmen
1 group of 6 Spearmen
2 groups of 5 Spearmen

Cheers
Björn

Ha! That was exactly what I thought when I saw this post. In the mean time I forgot everything about replying though.

But now I will officially +1 the swamp tiles! Terrific! Brilliant! Copied!  lol
