Flames of War Dutch Briefing is finally available!
« on: 30 August 2012, 10:28:31 AM »
Yay! The long awaited (well, by me anyway) Flames of War datafile/briefing for Dutch forces in 1940 is finally available:

http://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=3451

It has some jarring typos here and there, but it looks fully useable. Still; I will probably not use the Fokker G1, cool as it is, in favour of the more ubiquious and realistic Fokker C5 biplane for air support...

I had already aquired quite the collection of 15mm Dutch through Peter Pig and the other one supplier (Northstar?), but never knew how to base them to complete playable units. It appears the wait is over now, and work can be started on them.

Another project! I feel the need to create another spreadsheet... ;)

QRF have just recently released some KNIL, some of which might be suitable for your project and True North do a range of Dutch infantry and support weapons.
Cheers,

If I were to do this I'd use FoW Romanians, probably the cheapest and best 15mm 'Dutch' figures out there.

Thanks for the heads up, anyway, I shall have a good read of this.

a shame though that only a small part of the war is described.
they forgot to mention the Dutch shot down 75% of the German transports, which caused Germany their initiative for operation Seelowe.
and they forgot to mention that Germany lost 7500 of their Elite fallschirmjager and etc etc etc etc.
why is it always a one sided story when it comes to WW2 and the Dutch........

Even though I agree with you wholeheartedly, your numbers are ever so slightly off...

It was about 50% of the German transport aircraft that got destroyed over the Netherlands (most in Fall Citadel) and it was about 1700 airlanding troops that got POW(n)ed  (:D) and shipped to the UK to be detained for the duration of the war. But that was a mix of Fallschirmjäger and Air Landing Infantry.

But yes; Jerry got their first bloody nose right here in the Netherlands and in hindsight, this outcome could well have been decisive. Operation Seelöwe was aborted because they did not have the airborne capacity anymore that they required. Had they, at the time, the UK might well have been invaded and who knows what the outcome of that would have been? We might all be speaking German right now...  ;)

And you have to admit that, besides being woefully underfunded, the Dutch armed forces of the day were a mixed bag. Even though the individual troops were as courageous and tenacious as any other nation's, lack of modern communication equipment and (sometimes totally) incompetent leadership above company level ensured a less than stellar performance.

Then again, there's Kornwederzand, the completely contained air landings, the defence of the Rotterdam bridges and the aforementioned decimating of the German transport fleet.

But hey; I'm a fan, so I'll continue to work on my Dutch forces in both 28mm and 15mm...  8)
