Find me a Tutorial on Closed- Cell Polystyrene
« on: October 27, 2012, 06:28:31 PM »
I've had a good dig around here and elsewhere, but can anyone direct me to a good tutorial on making walls from closed cell foam?  I feel a project coming on...
Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an axe, hammer to fit, paint to match!

What kind of walls?

For adobe walls I just add paint with sand. Since carving patterns in Expanded polystyrene is almost impossible I use Wills plastic sheets for anything more fancy like a stone or brick wall

Thanks guys.

It's closed-cell styrofoam type stuff I'm talking about, to model a couple of moderately large drystone constructions.

For one I was thinking of using thin sheet and applique'ing it onto a base made of a.n. other material (e.g. polyolefin foam like I often use), for the other (a largeish ring shape) I was going to use a 50mm sheet, cut the ring out en bloc and engrave.

What i love about building stuff is - lots of ways lead to rome.
Ask 10 people how to build something and you learn of at least 12 different ways how to do it.
 :)
Most of my buildings and walls are from 5mm selitron. For thicker walls, doubled, sometimes glued on cardboard or plywood for maximum stability.
City/castle walls either hollow or with styrofoam core.

Cheers bone, its mainly finding the best way to incise / engrave the stone patterns. I don't fancy the plaster it up and mark into the surface route!

Either a biro ( with black refill!) or pencils - after incising /engraving it can look nice to roll/press a textured stone or a ball made from aluminium foil over the surface.

Noted! I'm gonna buy some thin sheets to practice on (as well as use) so I have some idea of how it works before I work on the big blocks.
