I'm personally offended(yes I take these thing personally    ;D)  by Peter Jackson's view of dwarfs...both from the LoTR and what I've seen of the Hobbit....he seems to think they are only fodder for comic relief...

...but that is beside the point...your painting is absolutely amazing and inspiring...I will enjoy watching this thread progress.

Keep up the good work!

Cheers,

Hm, are they good for anything else...?  :D

The problem with filming the LotR or the Hobbit is the lack of any real characters (which is of course a "problem" of the books in the first place). I actually liked Gimli a lot - not for his part of the comic relief (which is just plain film tradition) but because he was actually a person with the giggest psychological insight into his friends. And of course you had to make him different from the Boromirs and noble humans of the movie - if Gimli was just like them, where is the difference between human and dwarves culture? At least Peter Jackson thought about that problem even if his choices were not always the best.

I can agree with your criticism of the dwarves in the Hobbit movie. Not that I have seen it but to think that the dwarves (who are after all the King of Dwarves and his most loyal followers - noblemdwarves) look like a gang of lunatics is rather offputting.

And I saw no reason why they should have these non existing beards etc. - until my wife pointed out that no girl would like to see Richard Armitage with a long black beard. Let's face it: a hobbit and thirteen dwarves... where is the eye-candy for Jane Doe?

So despite GW's claims that the new game is backward compatible with the old game, we can see from the height of the Dwarves that the figures at least are not!  For %$&*'s sake! That dwarf is taller than the wood elf!

I think Dwalin is actually a rather huge dwarf in the movies. The Noldo elf is from the very first range of LotR miniatures for the Fellowship of the Ring movie. The figures were 25mm style but alas the scale has developed to the 28mm standard again. So even later LotR minitures were not compatible to the ones from the first movie. A shame really but unfortunately that's the way it goes. But looking at the Balin miniature (the one in red) shows that he at least is about the size of the generic plastic dwarves of LotR.

@HvM
Great painting. I like the way you use colors and the neat details you always pick out. I've been admiriring your stuff for Game of Throne and I think you've become even better with these dwarves.

Great paintjob!

I love how everyone says about breaking the Warhammer style mould of fantasy miniatures and then when someone does put something out more challenging, everyone moans!!!

Not sure that many people have moaned here. For my part it was an observation about the style of Dwarf in the film. I'm sure anyone can maon about the quality of the scuplts, they look lifelike!

I must say this thread has done more to inspire me to see the film thatn the trailers or other official sources.

Beautiful brushwork and color-choice, chapeau!!

And the miniatures are wonderful sculpts, I'm thinking about using them as a group of adventurers with mixed humans, dwarfs and in-betweens. When they will be available from Ebay real cheap in a couple of months.

With the dwarfs from Tolkien's "Hobbit" they don't have anything to do.

But that is true for this (three-parts ??!! o_o ???) film anyway.

That "tall dwarf" is ridiculous, but your painting is sublime.  :-*

As a long time fan of Dwarf-dom I was inclined to agree but there are variations in height of Humans, why not Dwarf, Elf, Halfling, Goblin, and Orc too?

Just saying...

Gracias,

Glenn
