sci fi trains?
« on: 25 December 2012, 07:37:13 AM »
Just a concept rattling around in my head right now but has anyone done/seen a sci fi board using a train? I've been thinking of constructing a few bits in 28mm to run skirmish and rp style games on but I'm looking for inspiration. (maybe maglev or monorail might look more scifi?)

As soon as I saw this thread I thought of the train from Ghosts of Mars, glad I'm not the only one! Best of luck with your project, dude. I'll be watching with interest.

I've been toying around with this idea for a while as well.   The Disney Monorail model train is about O scale which roughly correlates.....also there was this guy http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1628235004/sci-fi-traffic-hazards-28mm-vehicles-for-the-futur  One of the vehicles he did was a hoverbus/train, too bad he never got the funding.  Now if only I had the time...and money...and space....and proper equipment...and no kids at home...etc

Another good source of inspiration for this (I was reminded by ghosts of mars) is Ian Mcdonalds books Desolation Road and Ares Express. Ares Express in particular is heavily set on the Martian Railroad. The lead character was born, lives and works on a freight train.

The "Today, Tomorrow" listing at the end is screaming insanity from another dimension.

I seem to remember a rather nice train being featured in the film 'Priest' (2011). If you want to go Old school, there's Dan O'Bannon's concept for a Metro/Monorail in Verhoeven's 'Total Recall'.

Awesome Video.  I remember some of the shows advertised.  I'm impressed that Supertrain has an onboard Disco.  Groovy.  And 6 whole Million Dollars to build!

On a sad note we spend Billions a year on real trains no one ride.
This is my boomstick!

Supertrain... I remember the show being on cable when I was a kid, but I never actually saw an episode (we didn't have cable).

Planet Story by Harry Harrison is a great story about a SF train, but it's very retro.

Big Picture so I linked to it rather than inline it.
