ACW uniform question
« on: 02 January 2013, 08:23:22 PM »
Hi folks!
I like the Dynamic poses of the new Perry plastic confeds. Is it possible to Concept them into Yankees? With some Green stuff and Not too much effort?
Thanks
Jan

Attention, this is your brain - stop thinking about that! You have to paint lots of 40mm Perrys first!  o_o

typically (because in the ACW there were a lot of exceptions to the rule) the northeners used longer jackets (frock jackets, they ended about the middle of the tigh) than the southeners, from what I've read the new perry plastic soldiers have shorter jackets (shell jackets)

so that should be the main change you should make
Cheers,
Pedro

yes, it should be simple... I'm currently checking the miniatures at their website and they have a lot of them with the bedroll worn, this was not uncommon for the union soldiers, but its more typical of the rebel ones

PS: Hope these will come out as good as the rebel soldiers you did a couple of years ago  :)

I think you mean sack coats

This question was lso asked on the Steve Dean forum. Personally speaking, yes, you could use these figures to represent Yankees. There were Union regiments that were issued shell jackets, for example, some Irish regiments of the Irish Brigade wore them.

A great source of information is Don Troiani, an American historical artist. He is THE expert on ACW uniforms

If you are handy with greenstuff, you could sculpt some shoulder straps which was a common feature of Union shell jackets.

hope this helps. I intend to paint up a unit like this using the plastic rebs  8)

I surely expect the Union counterparts will be available in a few months. Surely worth waiting. While I agree some USA regts wore shell jackets, they would have different canteens and belt buckles.

And think...... When the USA set comes out, the opportunities for kit-bashing and being creative will be much, much greater.

Unfortunately I don't think you're right. We have seen 0 greens for plastic Union troops. On the other hand the Perrys have shown off plastics for AWI, WW2  and some other stuff, all of which are still to be tooled. Along with Renedra being choc-a-bloc for 18 months, I really don't expect plastic Union troops before 2014

Jan unless your painting specific units I really wouldn't worry about it that much as regular units looked reasonably similar on both sides with a the exceptions of union troops tended to be more in sack coats and kepi's and rebs in hats and shell jackets, but that shouldn't prevent you from using the confederate box as union troops. Just try and have a larger portion of the figures in kepi's if possible.

TBH, if there is a lot of work to do, Perry's metals are not that expensive by comparison........  :D
