Bill T's amazing Jomsvikings (my go at painting them)
« on: 21 January 2013, 09:35:08 PM »
Last Crisis I couldn't resist. I had to buy Gripping Beast's Jomsvikings! Sculpted by Bill T, these are some of the coolest Dark Age miniatures around! And they paint as easily as they are beautiful. Only fully painted 2 till now, but some more are in various stages of colourfulness.

Say hello to Gunnar and Ottar Greyhair. Ottar's shield is handpainted.

PS: Could someone inform me, why the Jomsvikings are carrying these squarish shields? Are there depictions of such shields? I couldn't find anything.

I know nothing about Vikings but there's a shield just like that on the cover of the Osprey book. That's where most sculptors get their ideas!  :)

You're a hell of a painter, Dimi, and your powers have not diminished any since you last posted. I love these latest pics.

I see! So, might be a case of history inventing itself. :)

Thank you for your very kind words, Dylan! I guess moving house strengthened my painting muscles. :D

This is the image I was thinking of:

I have this book, but it is up in the attic in a place where there is no working light. And it is night time. It probably tells you their source but right now it is out of reach and so I am no help.   :)

Good thing I now have a Kindle app. :) Let's see if that one exists electronically. Thank you! :)

IIRC that is a Rus soldier.

FYI The rectangular shield is associated with the Rus and is thought to be a Dark Age version of the old Roman Legionary Scutum, hence the crude thunderbolt symbols etc.

As far as I know the Jomsviking aren't pure historical, more of a legend based on certain viking sagas. And since they lived in what today is Poland (on the island of Wollin) the Rus connection isn't too far fetched.

Anyway, beautiful painting on those, and yeah they are amazing sculpts!

Thank you all! More to come soon(ish). I bought the Jomsvikings deal. :D

Interesting info on the shield. So it's something of an anachronism... But is there actual proof that such shields existed? Any reliefs, art or actual finds?

I think I've seen a picture in a book of a small carving that had that sort of shield but I'll be blowed if I can remember where is saw it  ::)

Wonderful painting  :-* :-*

Nice painting!

The Jomsvikings as interpreted by Gripping Beast seem to be a stepping stone between the standard Vikings and the Rus(sian) ones. In fact, I will be doing a Saga Rus list based on the Byzantine battle board and mixing both the GB Rus and Joms ranges.
