"American churches are heavily armed places with one church in Texas even having a 50 calibre anti-aircraft gun emplacement in the car park."

I got a chuckle out of this last line in the article.  I asked my pastor if he carried a gun in the church I go to and he said, "Sure do, loaded with .45 ACP silver bullets."  I asked why silver and he said, "Those werewolves and if the zombie Apocalypse happens, the silver is soft so it makes a better splatter."

What a silly article

Clearly the 50 BMG is for anti-infantry....it only does decent in anti-aircraft if you have a quad of them!

I assume this Daily Squib is a "for fun" publications like The Onion here in the USA?

I suspect 'Anti-Aircraft use' was thought to be less whacko than winged flying demons from hell... and if you ask me one .50 is always better than no .50, whatever it is that you're shooting at.

Points taken.  Especially the  "no .50" one.

Hmm, Genevan convention prohibits the use of a .50 MG on infantry. May the Vatican allows it to be used on heathens...  o_o

That is apparently a myth... if it were true, you'd certainly be in deep trouble for using a 155mm shell..  ::)

When I was a conscript the Lt. training us claimed so, but he also said : "See if I'd care if a horde of enemies was to assault my position and I'd happen to have a .50 at hand..."   >:D

That's essentially the way it goes too... 'weapons which cause unnecessary suffering' (not necessarily those which cause horrific wounds by the way), are prohibited, if there is no military advantage to be gained from their use.

So pretty much everything is okay... overkill being a pretty good military advantage and all that.  >:D

Which explains all the separate agreements over specific weapons since then. ::)

That was my take on it as well.  It is a fake news story.

Yes, that 'myth' about 50 BMG not being allowed for anti-personnel appears all over.  I do think that many Sgt and Lts. legitimately tell the average grunts this.  I just don't know how many Sgts and Lts. actually believe it and how many know it is BS but it is fun to perpetrate the myth anyways.

My favorite variant is 'the 50 BMG cannot be used in anti-infantry, it can only be used for anti-material...so if you ever take the M-2 and shoot up a bunch of guys in a truck, tell anyone who asks you were shooting at them to destroy the truck, not the guys inside, they were just collateral damage.  If the enemy aren't in a truck...tell em you are shooting at them to destroy their BDUs (uniforms)!'
