Suggestions for The Green Knight?
« on: March 05, 2013, 02:55:45 PM »
Dear all,

I have a half-realised project to do Sir Gawain and the Green Knight - in a post Roman / Dark Ages context.

So, for Gawain I'm spoiled for choice - there are plenty of nice 28mm Arthurian sculpts out there that will fit the bill. But I'm struggling with the Green Knight and I wonder if anyone can help?

My interpretation (based on Brian Stone's translation) is of a giant (so significantly more than 28mm!), but fully human figure, dressed in rich clothing (and specifically NOT wearing armour!). I think I would put the bar up at about 40mm total height - any more than that is just too big.

The nearest I've got is some of the Heroes of the Dark Ages figures (which are very BIG 28mm's) but I'm not 100% happy these fit.

I'm happy to do minor resculpting of (e.g.) clothes, weapons, hair etc, so any suggestions gratefully received!

Thanks in advance,

M
Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an axe, hammer to fit, paint to match!

Darksword's King Robert Baratheon figure?  ???

I'm not sure exactly how big he is, but I'm reasonably certain he's bigger than 28mm.

Well he certainly LOOKS the part! Thanks very much - can anyone add anything regarding height? The website isn't very forthcoming...

I had a quick look on the Darksword website and the GOT range is touted as 28 - 32mm, but Robert is meant to be an imposing 6'6", and since its a Tom Meier sculpt, I'd guess the figure stands around 35mm.

Some sort of confirmation from someone who's actually seen one would be helpful though...  ;)

I don't have them myself, but many of the Dark Sword SoIF series figures I've seen are very big, sometimes hitting 40mm, or close to it.

The DarkSword website is not the easiest to get around, is it? Searching for Tom Meier sculpts, the one you referenced, JollyBob definitely looks the best.

Any more ideas from anyone?

There was a Game of Thrones thread that used Perry figures with some of the Darksword figures. The difference in size was significant. I imagine you could have some liberty over the term "giant", surely?

A 28mm Hagrid mini might be about right, if you can find one.

Hodor from Dark Sword Miniatures might do (if you can be bothered scraping Bran off his back- poor Bran, always with the scraping)-

You could also do a search for "half-giants". There's http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/half%20giant/latest/03412 who would look ok with a putty beard.

Some old school giants might do too, such as Hecatron, Ral Partha 01-067 (i own this guy- he's about 35mm in a crouching position). Hecatron was sculpted by Tom Meier, if you decide to go with one of his Aurthurians for Gawain.

Absolutely! I think anything much more than about 40mm tall might push it, but the main criteria are that the sculpt is "human looking" as opposed to an obvious "monster". Unarmoured would be better but I'm willing to resculpt clothing.

King Robert is currently heading the field - changing the goblet for a honking great axe with the blade on the floor should prove too challenging.

I also wonder about the Sash and Saber 40mm vikings - the unarmoured viking axe men would work, but I don't know what I would do with the other 19 figures! The command pack is a more realistic sized set, but looks less useful. has anyone got the beserkers - what are they like?
