Human only fantasy?
« on: April 04, 2013, 08:25:31 AM »
Hello,

Does anyone  do fantasy but only use human figures (Conan or similar) ?

Swapping humans for elves , orcs, beastmen etc ?

Just looking at all the 20mm plastics  from biblicals to renaissance, great potential and relatively cheap.

Ken.

I've not done it; but have often toyed with the idea; especially given the potential, as you say, to mix figures form a range of different time periods. ECW pike & shot blocks vs Dark Age 'barbarians' and so on...

Tony Bath's Hyboria campaign would be the prime example.

Long ago I took part in 'Hyboria-like' campaign - humans only and more 'alternate history' than fantasy- but Elves minis were accepted. There was not the same cornucopia of choice by then than nowadays, the Ral Partha 'Fantasy Colector' Elves were very nice figurines mixing well with the manufacturer's 'Hyborian Age' & 'Legions of the Petal Throne' and with the Minifigs (from 'Mythical Earth' to the Amazons of Aureola Rococo) & Garrison (the 'NOT Conan' Aquilanders, Nimidians, Hykranians ^-^), and on the table-top could pass for humans.

Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd & Grey Mouser stories setting of Nehwon is predominately human.  He had Ghouls but they were just humans with transparent skin, so you could see their innards....

There's also David Dremmels 'Legend' et al, for inspiration. There's absolutely no reason not to at all.
