IHMN newbie question
« on: May 24, 2013, 06:01:46 PM »
Being an IHMN noob I've been gradually reading through the posts to get up to speed but wondered if there's a source for FAQ's, quick sheet downloads etc.

Being an IHMN noob ...

Because those of us who've had it three or four weeks are grognards, are we? It's barely been out a month!

It's an adrenaline pumped roller coaster of a ride in the fast moving world of wargaming. Unless you're still using WRG rules that is ..........

now hasn't this new game grabbed the already VSF-sensitive ones like a fever?  ;)
I am getting envious, I think I must get a copy myself.
Wonder if there are teutonianss who game this.....

Anyway, the spirit I "smell" is like VSF has finally got a cyberpunk-pulp retrofit, or not?

Not exactly...

Early on in the ideas stage Charles and I decided to focus the game around the works of the contemporary Victorian Science Fiction and Military authors. Then we added the 'Babbage managed to perfect his Analytical Engine' twist, and a few mystical powers such as were then commonly believed to exist.

We didn't want to go down any of the 'punk' roads currently well-served by other games writers, but to explore an area almost forgotten. We were both brought up reading H.G Wells, Arthur Conan Doyle, H. Rider-Haggard, Rudyard Kipling, Mark Twain, Edgar Rice Burroughs and Jules Verne. Our heroes came from these writers works.

The result is In Her Majesty's Name and we seem to have hit a nerve. Don't ask us how, we are as confused and delighted as our publishers.

I hope that helps put the game in context  :)

THX for elaborating
so basically, it is more a "back to the roots" thing, if I understand correctly?

will have to think abot that.

Indeed, because when all is said and done, the 'roots' were pretty good in themselves.

What ho!

If 'steampunk' is taken to a be back-projection from cyberpunk, then I'd agree with Craig that is isn't 'steampunk' because it doesn't really play up the dystopian element; nor does the technology seem to be the major focus (but then the game has only been out a couple of weeks, it could all be Arc rifles, Totentruppen and armies of mechanical walkers this time next year).

At the moment it looks like bands of intrepid (or nefarious) adventurers foiling each others' schemes, with a little weird science thrown in. In some ways, however, to disagree with Craig, I'd say it's got more of a 'Pulp' feel to it than what one might consider 'steampunk' - I certainly think that there are things that connect with my idea of Pulp; but I suspect that it's actually a robust enough system to play as anything you want, from a fairly straight 'historical adventure' system all the way through to a weird-science apocalypse.

<snip>

Not all.  Looks... "interesting" but guess my immunizations are working.   ;)

Or maybe I am too cheap to spring for another set of rules (it would be number, what.... 200?)   lol

The Devil you know...

well, I should have written Steampunk, I just thought cyber because of that difference engine.
But anyway, Pulp and VSF are only contradictions if applied to their original setting - not least due to both not being exactly defined at all. So I find myself a bit confirmed by @Red Orc in that my personal "feeling" for Pulp is reflected in IHMN.
One could also argue that the origins of Pulp Fiction lie in what @Craig referred to as  "the roots".

But this is only theory - in effect, IHMN teases me very much as being very interesting...
