Suggestions for building a 15mm modern town?
« on: June 05, 2013, 02:18:46 PM »
I want to create a city or town - maybe 9 square blocks, and I am starting from scratch.

Any recommendations?  Im thinking of scratch building most of it, but Im not opposed to buying some model train stuff either.  However, most of (at least what I can find) the train stuff is set in 50s, 60s, and 70s (at best!).  Im thinking of using cork to make most of the buildings.

Where can I get 15mm 'stuff'?  Things like stop lights, trash bins, mail boxes, building awnings, window frames, doors, and things to create 'texture' on the sides of buildings?  Gas station pumps, fencing, sidewalks?  Just the types of stuff you might see in the middle of a downtown area.

Thanks very much!

for extras I'd look into HO scale. 1/87 is larger than 15mm but close enough to get away with it.

Peter Pig as a lot of nice bits and pieces of terrain and does theScene. Khurasan do some bits and pieces as do ground zero games although these may be a little more sci-fi. 4ground do some nice and relatively cheap laser cut fences

HO scale is fantastic, you can even use it alternatively for 20mm...  I do!

Couple more links:

laser cut mdf buildings (flats & shops): http://www.madmechaguy.co.uk/index.html

gzg has a couple of accessories and the Colonial Settlement Buildings ranges (shippings crates & shanty town style shacks, which should work well for houses build after the apocalypse) : http://shop.groundzerogames.net/index.php?_a=viewCat&catId=102

couple of ruined buildings including factories: http://www.fieldworks.org.uk/15mm.htm

Have a look at the Falklands and the Vietnam stuff (featuring more shanty town stuff but also a small gas station): http://www.timecastmodels.co.uk/buildings_catalogue/15mm_catalogue.html
