Building suggestions for pirate town
« on: October 23, 2015, 11:34:47 PM »
Fellow LAFers, I'm looking to put together a pirate town. Not really historical, but rather a fantasy golden age of piracy movie one. Now all I need are buildings. I've been trawling through LAF and there are several useful threads, but they're also full of dead links and broken photos, making it a bit frustrating.

So, I'm turning to you for recommendations on buildings. While I do scratchbuild every now and then, I'm looking to get a finished product on the table fairly quickly, so I'm not looking to do a lot of building. I have the following criteria:

- Has "that pirate look", so basically either Mediterranean/Spanish, half-timbered or generic enough.

- Decent price. I don't mind paying for a quality product, but I'm also not looking to buy plenty of buildings at £30-40 each.

- Reasonable shipping to Europe. It's no use buying a building for £10 if the shipping costs and customs charges double or triple the price.

- Interior access is a bonus, but not a requirement.

- Suggestions for accessories (carts, market stalls, palm trees and the like) are also welcome.

As I can use the forum's search function and Google, I have a fairly good idea of what's out there. That's why I'm looking for personal experiences, views and pictures of different manufacturers' products in use. At the moment I'm veering towards buying at least a few buildings from Games of War, but I would like more variety.

Looking forward to your suggestions! I promise to post plenty of pictures once I get around to actually building the town.

Sorry I won't be much help we scratch built all of ours.

Likewise I have mostly built my own but here is a firm that produces what you want for reasonable prices given that they are pre-painted.

I have just ordered some of their ploughed fields and they were good quality and sent very quickly. Postage is quite reasonable too.

Old Glory in the US has decent church/chapel that might fit your needs:

There are some other buildings in the different ranges of 25mm buildings which might work. Regarding shipping, I am not sure if Old Glory UK stocks the same items, but I seem to remember hearing that Old Glory tries hard to keep international shipping down.

Thanks for the suggestions! Maybe a combination of Tablescape and Games of War would be nice. Love that Old Glory church, too. If anything else pops into your mind, let me know!

If you want something cheaper you might want to look at Italeri's Country House with Porch . It works with 28mm and is reasonably easy to convert, so you can get value out of more than one kit.

http://www.italeri.com/scheda.asp?idProdotto=885&idCategoria=37&idSottocategoria=0

Their church isn't especially Caribbean in style but could conceivably work. Chepaer than most resin kits and it's a honking big centrepiece.

My 28mm Caribbean/Pirate town is composed of Old Glory and Miniature Building Authority buildings.  You can see them at www.warin15mm.com/Pirates.html

I forgot to mention that Kobblestone Miniatures also has a line of Mediterranean structures that would work well in a Caribbean pirate town.  Kobblestone makes beautiful buildings and is a great company to do business with.  I have several of their Mediterranean pieces that are as yet unpainted, but I used many of their Middle Eastern buildings in my Pulp Egyptian collection along side buildings by Miniature Building Authority and Architects of War and they look great together in terms of size and design.  You can see those buildings in my Pulp Egyptian Gallery at www.warin15mm.com/28MM-Pulp-Egyptian-Gallery.html
