So, what are good Napoleonic fast-playing rulesets for 1/72 mini's?

Black Powder are quite adaptable....

Hmm;
Go here:  http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/search.mv

Enter   "  Napoleonic rules  "   in the search bar and be astounded (and somewhat daunted no doubt) by the hundreds, nay thousands, of pages of discussion.

This may give you some idea how big the can of worms you just opened is:
http://deepfriedhappymice.com/html/pov_napoleonics.html  ;)

Short answer is that there is no easy recommendation until you decide what kind of game you want.

I'd like something fast-playing, with not too many special stuff to remember, with battalions as the main "unit". More of a beer & pretzels type then a grognard-suitable game.

Hmm, its worth reading up on a few sets then to pick your scale of battle, my old favs were

Shako
General de Brigade

you could pick up the Crusader Napoleonic rules nice and straight forward

Please give me an example of the "... special stuff to remember..." you want to avoid.

Gracias,

That's Black Powder!
You can add in special theme rules as desired.

I would second Blackpowder as a good beer and pretzels game. perfect for 2-6 players over a few hours and beers  :)

Very good for Pike and Shotte too. Haven't played Hail Ceasar ancients version yet.

Cheers

Crikey, sir. I'm looking forward to today. Up diddly up, down diddly
down, whoops, poop, twiddly dee - decent scrap with the fiendish Red
Baron - bit of a jolly old crash landing behind enemy lines - capture,
torture, escape, and then back home in time for tea and medals.

Agree with those recommendations, Black Powder would work as would Rank & File from Crusader via Northstar.

IMHO the latter has the better feel for battalion level Napoleonic games, both need quite a lot of figures though as a 2 brigade Division is about the minimum number of troops you need on the table. Black Powder especially does not scale down well to smaller sized forces as it then becomes very much "luck of the dice"

If you want to go smaller than that (just 2 or 3 battalions a side) then old rules like TTG's Sound of the Guns will give you a better game.

Stuff like: First I charge my cavalry, then you countercharge your cavalry, then you opportunitycharge your cavalry, then I charge my infantry, then you countercharge your infantry, then you opportunitycharge your infantry. Now we are fighting, I have modifiers for P, Q, R, S and T. You have modifiers for A, B, C, and F. That means I get +1 on my first die and -2 on the second, you get -1 on the first and no modification on the second so that means that you have 7 casualties so you now have to withdraw so....

Just not too many things to keep in your head while playing, basically.

I've now found a free set online, by the way, called "a near-run thing", which is really hard to understand because of the illogical build-up, but once you get it quite fast-playing and fun. Maybe I'll try out Black Powder too, as that seems to be the general recommendation.

Thanks for the advice!
