Astounding work!  Wow!

Question - how do you paint the the first guy's R arm protection?  Did you block paint and then wash or did you paint stripes (so to speak) in the crevasses?

I am having a hard time getting a good effect like that on Roman arm-protection and on puttees in general.  I'd love to learn your technique as it looks fantastic.

You're currently running through the LAF boards, scattering beautiful painted minis, aren't you? :)

Well done again, good idea to use a Hoplite.

Block paint trying to keep the black lining between the stripes, then wash (depending on the colours that you use), and highlight carefully and finally fix mistakes. If you keep the black lines you can skip the wash if you want. With metals is easier, metal base color, ink wash (black, sepia or brown depending again on the colour), and highlight. Hope that helps.

Thanks, I'm one of those butterfly painters, you know...  :D

I thought that the hoplite would be a good way to play with some different gladiators, may be for representing mythological fights in the arena. I would like to find a good "Minotaur" as opponent for the Hoplomachus. I would like to do something using a bull head like the one in the Gladiator film.

Cheers,

Andrés.

Which brand of washes are you using?

The GW washes don't settle in crevasses like I want them to and the Vallejo ones dry with this brown crud when I thin them with water, so I am looking for a new brand.

I use Vallejo Inks (they have washes but I don't like them) or Army Painter (these are like the GW ones but I like them more). Cheers.

Thanks for that pointer to Vallejo Inks, I, like ErikB, had been getting brown crud when thinning down the Vallejo washes.
Incidently,  as much as I like your Hoplomachus(your usual brilliant painting), I feel that he does not live up to the common belief in the over endowment of gentlemen from the Dark Continent.

I don't think your wedding tackle would be swinging all loosey goosey if there was someone swinging a sharp bladed object at you  :D
einarolafson, great painting as usual.  Really like your shields.

Pantless Trait
Your gladiator has no pants. He may wield either a weapon or a shield, not both. The other hand is always protecting his tackle. -1 Favour in cold climates.

I would like to do something using a bull head like the one in the Gladiator film.

There's a gladiator in Foundry's GLAD2/3 pack that's wearing a bull's head in a similar fashion, although he's otherwise somewhat heavily armored for a gladiator.
