Afghanistan Terrain and Miniatures (as at 23 Jan)

Earlier this year I completed some generic 28mm North Africa / Middle East buildings. It's not enough for a game of Force on Force or Flying Lead on a 4' x 4' table, so I realised I'd eventually need to build some more.

Most of the 28mm moderns players I game with have forces set for Afghanistan. While my buildings work for more built-up areas, for engagements in the countryside I would need to do something more "authentic". After a few hours on Google image search and YouTube (there really is A LOT of source material out there) I had a plan of what I wanted to construct - including both buildings and scatter terrain.

during this time of the year (while watching le Tour) I get some peace and quiet to do some larger hobby projects. In the last week I have managed to construct the following:

Some market stalls, which will get cloth soaked in PVA sails:


Materials are MDF base, card, foam core, bamboo (skewers and chopsticks) and masking tape. I'll be using more Vollmer printed card for the walls, plastering them and using teddy bear fur for the roofs.

While not to level of the terrain-crazies on here, I have been inspired by them. If I get this whole project done by the end of the month I'll be very happy.

I may still add some compound walls and some tall T-barriers if I feel like it.

Thanks - I have photos to take of my update. A broken finger has limited my practical hobby time these last two months.

The buildings have had plaster/undercoated black some time late in 2013. Last weekend I trimmed the teddy bear fur, sorted out the scatter terrain (built an extra one) and started searching the bit box for a cameraman's head to repace the sci-fi GZG one the miniature has. All will be shown in photos over the next week.

No FOB, though I love Bluestone 42 (well Kelly Adams really). The look of the table is a market town (based off a doco that had British troops trying to reestablish a market town - will look for name). Basically less walls, etc than normal and lots of scatter terrain.

No Soviet kit, but will add if I find something cheap.

Yeah, that's a good start. I always wanted something similar... but all these terrain projects just take up too much storage so I end up painting miniatures instead.

I'd advice you to tear some of the card and sculpt the foam under it.
It takes a little bit of time, but the result is great.

That's pretty - unfortunately all that foamcore is covered in plaster/sand mix. Only painting left.

Finally pulled my finger out and took some photos of what I aim to finish:


- 7 buildings (including a road side checkpoint hut)
- 2 1:43 die cast Hummer H3 cars that need weathering and detail painted
- 12 miniatures (including some conversion work)
- a whole lot of scatter terrain, from billboards, market stalls and goods and smoke grenade cloud

Looks promising 

The only thing that jumps out is the size of the pallets, they are usually just over a metre square and the ones you have look to be nearly three.

Looking mighty fine  Just what Jimbo said about the pallet size, they do look rather big.

I think if you are not up to making smaller ones by yourself to save project time for other builds, you can find suitable sized ones from railroad scenery manufacturers.
