Skirmish rules for FIW?
« on: 01 August 2013, 11:14:13 PM »
Hello!

I'm great fan of FIW, so we started play Muskets & Tomahawks. It's pleasure to play and runs smooth, but I'd like to try something with less miniatures in action. J.F. Cooper's novels are one of my inspiration and it would be great to play defence of the house on the lake or pursuit of Hawk Eye and Mohikans after Magua. M&T are played with units and I search for something like 4 to 10 models per side.

Can you propose a rules, which suit my tastes?

Check out my website: http://www.battlefieldgamedesigns.com/
and go to Buckskins and Rangers - Skirmish Rules for Gaming the French Indian War.

It just won a PELA Award at Historicon

Hi Kadzic,

Check out the above suggestions, plus Sharp Practice, with or without the FIW supplement (the original rules include Indians). Check out the Wargames Rules & Books page on my site:

I love Sharp Practice, but it won't work for something like four heroes defending a cabin. For JF Cooper-style action you want something like "Among the War Parties" from Rattrap Productions. http://www.rattrapproductions.com/shop/among-the-war-parties-pdf/

If I remember correctly, you need Gloire to use Among the War Parties, but you can look at a free demo of Gloire here http://www.rattrapproductions.com/ to get an idea.

Try "Gloire" with the "Among the War Parties" add-on book from Ratrap Productions.

I suggest something from the Songs of Blades and Heroes line from Ganesha Games. The rule book that is currently best for FIW is "Song of Drums and Shakos" -- meant for the black powder era. I have been using a modified version of these rules for my FIW games for several years. They work out great whether as one-on-one, or multiplayer. Currently, I've shrunk the number of figs each player commands down to 7...which sounds close to what you're wanting. The publisher has approached me to publish this as a stand alone set. We are working on it right now, but I expect it is at least a few months from publication. However, feel free to download SDS and I'd be happy to let you know the mods we have used for this period.

Thanks for all answers! I will wait for SDS, cause Gloire feel too complicated for me (system is simple, but all this marking wounds, skills etc. make it harder than RPG sesion).
Till this time we will propably use IHMN rules. They are fun and allow for great customisation.

Well, To Be Continued by GASLIGHT would be perfect for what you are trying to do.  Though this is a Pulp variation of the GASLIGHT rules (which were initially intended for Civil War through WWI/ Victorian SciFi) these rule work for just about anything.  Just played a set of linked games where most of the time the players had 2 figures each (4 of us playing).  I'm a big fan of the GASLIGHT games because you can easily play most any situation you can think up...with any figures that you have or want to use.  The set up for games is on you, as there are no set stats for anything, just some suggestions, but after playing a few games balancing scenarios gets easier.

You can find the printed GASLIGHT Compendium on Amazon and at Brigade Games (Brigade has the best price!).  The PDF version can be found at http://www.rpgnow.com/product/90907/GASLIGHT-Compendium.

Another option for skirmish F&IW rules in Brother vs Brother.  These rules are a card and dice based game.  They have morale cards selected after hits on a unit or before a charge.  We have used them for years for games with 20 to 400 figures.  They are best suited for games with games up to four palyers and 80 to 160 figures in my opinion.  When we have used these for large games 200-300 figues a few judges are needed to keep things moving and in sequence.

The basic unit is of ten men including a leader figure.  A company can include three ten man units, with a company commander.  Command radius is an important element.  Figures/units may move, fire, reload or charge when activated by a card pull from a deck.  These rules are simple and easy to learn for a convention game.  All charts can be on a two sided page.

While these were written as an ACW set of rule, the rule book contains F&IW varient rules and charts.  We have used these rules for both periods exrtensively.

You could try these:

http://www.keepwargaming.co.uk/fire-and-steel-skirmish-rules-1700-1900-152-p.asp

They cover most musket/rifle musket era wars in skirmish style. There is a F&IW scenario included in the book - from memory it has about 15 figures per side. All this for only £4.00!

My group has successfully used them for Indian Mutiny era games for years now!

Cheers

I have just assembled my 4Ground FIW blockhouse, now I am keen to play Muskets & Tomahawks which I bought at Cancon 2013.  :P

Also picked up some Hudson & Allen Indian Village pieces but they need some more paint thrown at them before they can be tabled. I plan to use the Pegasus Russian Houses for settlers cabins.
Cheers,
