All this discussing of untouched purchases has really motivated me to get some more painting done today than I had originally planned.

But I will say that if it weren't for the constant cycle of people selling their models I would have never been able to stick with the hobby.

Back in the day, I could neither afford nor justify what GW charged, and ebay/Kijiji/craigslist were the source of what is now 70% of my collection. The rest being made up of alternative sculpts and smaller manufacturers.

And it's only in the past 5-8 years that warhammer kits started to call for a much higher pricepoint on the 2nd hand market.  Hopefully TOW is successful enough to flood the secondary market again, allowing  a more affordable entry point for many new youbg hobbyists.

That's not exactly unique to GW players though.
...
And it's all fine - buying, looking at, imagining the finished results are all facets of "the wargames hobby" (and many other hobbies too). It may not be "your" version of the hobby, but then it'd be dull if we were all the same. Why does it matter if someone buys some stuff doesn't paint it and then sells it later? They've had some pleasure going through that process - good luck to 'em I say.

Great post, TWD, totally agree. Among folk I know who are into the hobby, most of Elbows's description fits the Kickstarter enthusiasts more than the GW enthusiasts to be honest - go all in on one, and then when it arrives months or years later than expected, half-heartedly tinker with the minis before trying to sell them on, having in the meantime gone all in on other kickstarters for which the cycle repeats  ;) Nothing wrong with that if it floats your boat.

So if it's a "bubble" it's one that has existed for more than half the lifetime of the original hobby from which it sprang.

When I said bubble I was referring to the churn and burn purchase pattern, always chasing the new shiny. I do remember some players being like that when I was a lad but it didn't seem to be as common, probably because there wasn't as much money around.

That's not exactly unique to GW players though.
Almost every other thread on here has reference to their "lead mountain" or wargames butterfly or mention of models they "don't remember buying" or people "geting back to a project I started X years ago", blaming the "shiny thing syndrome" etc. etc.
Likewise Facebook pages about new games (looking at you Baron's War) are filed with people who've "just pulled the trigger" on large orders, the majority of whom will then post enthusiastically for a couple of weeks before later reappearing offering a "98% untouched just one or two models started" deal.

None of this is criticism by the way. I am as guilty of most of these behaviours as the next person.
A small number of my hobby circle are the disciplined types (completer finishers in terrible corporate speak) who single mindeldly work through a project to completion - usually at speed and to a very high standard. The rest of us drift about from thing to thing sometimes coming back, sometimes moving on.

I see variations of this in friends with other interests and pursuits - "all the gear, no idea" cyclists and golfers for instance - anglers with multiple rods who only ever actually use the one they've had since they were fifteen, football fans with multiple replica shirts many worn only once if at all.

Excellent post, well said.

I imagine that people either drift into the wider wargaming world, or simply drop it all as they only really cared about warhammer specifically. so you have some players who go from "gotta have all the marines!" to "gotta have all the bavarians!" over several years, and others who go from "gotta have all the mariens!" to "gotta have all the bikes/cars/cocaine/rare birds eggs!".

Which direction you go depends largely on which aspects of the hobby you enjoy, how reliable your coke dealer is, or your proximity to a bird sanctuary.

My older brother finally made the leap away from GW (We still play together though) and got to playing Frostgrave. Smaller mini count, play with what you want. Simpler more flowing rules that let you play in a shorter time with just as much (if not more) fun.

Thousand Sons out this weekend for pre-order. Book, dice, cards for me, and maybe the new robot automatons. Pre-orders start on Friday nights at 2200 at the independent shops, which is fun.

STILL no re-stock on Howling Banshees…  o_o
2025 painted model count: 355

Well, HOLY CRAP. I ordered my 2 boxes of Howling Banshees today! Didn’t get an email to let me know they were available, I just keep checking day-to-day.

Today was my lucky day, I guess! I almost had given into buying a “Premium Combat Patrol 2” box that also had a Daemon Prince in it - at eBay stupid prices.

Hard to believe I find GW prices acceptable compared to eBay - but it’s true. It’s a wacky world.

I think I’m the only person responding to this thread now  lol

This week’s pre-order was … Cathay! The long anticipated and genuinely nice looking new “Old World” release. I managed to get one of each set, through two orders.

The only thing stopping me getting the lantern is I can't think of what to do with it (don't do fantasy gaming at the moment). Oh, and that it is nearly £100.

But what a lovely, lovely looking kit it is!

The sky lantern is amazing but really I'd  be buying it as a model kit rather than a gaming piece, and I don't have the space...

Saying that, there are lots of bits from this wave of releases that I will be looking to pick up on ebay - the ogre from the cannon kit, some of the lantern crew, a few odds and ends here and there - so much potential for kitbashing shenanigans.

All but the dragon I got at 15% off, which helps a lot; I’m thinking that the Cathay might make good conversion material for my Eldar… but who knows.

My thought, too - a very exotic Exodite army.
