Inscribe copper, then bronze, then Decoart Emperor's gold over the usual red brown base.

Very nice Viking Too Bo Coo! Welcome to the "Challenge" I love the aggressive pose of the figure. The paint is also most excellent! The same colors are nicely carried throughout the figure and shield. Is the shield a paint or transfer? either way a great look! Speaking of looking if we point the camera in the direction of the vikings gaze we will see what he is looking at!

I tried to do a Cubs style battered and weathered shield but only managed to make it look like a cat's dirt box

Not at all, I'm actually unpainting the figure  
Essentially I just rub the matt black enamel base coat off with 0000 wire wool before I do any other painting, it's tends to get messy.
It's more about how you do it than what you do. Wrapping the wool round different things like cocktail sticks or paintbrush handles lets you get into nooks and crannies and also allows harder pressure to be put on the wire wool.
Be careful not to wear away any detail especially around helmets, you can take a nose off as quick as a cuckold Apache if your not paying attention  
Ink washes over the bare metal can give some good effects as well, blue tends to make armour look clean while brown makes it look dirty.

You can also make armour look very bright by burnishing the armour with a stainless steel darning needle, I use a wax 5 sculpting tool.
Unfortunately none of this works on Perry plastics.

As a kid I was shown a technique to wash the metals, then use the u shaped sander with the flexible ribbon 'paper' to 'shine' up the metals.  I've always thought about going back to it...

This guy does not trust his companions, and wears a full cuirass instead of just the breast plate (only appropriate, as he is also meant for Pike & Shot and Zombies)  

First pic is a bit blurred, I'll see if I can find time to do another tonight...





This conludes my meager contribution to this challenge, I'm afraid - I'm going away to Horisont V this weekend, and expect to see #200 upon returning home Sunday evening
