Winter (War) is coming...
« on: September 27, 2013, 08:08:27 PM »
I guess many of you already know about the Winter War Kickstarter by Baker Company? If not, you got still 10 days to hop on that awesome KS, the rewards are just too good to pass. And with the Early War Red Army chaps one has an opportunity to use them in many other projects besides the Winter War.

Here's the link for the KS just in case:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1030835091/winter-war-wargaming-miniatures

So while waiting for the minis to arrive, I thought I would get a head-start for the project and start making some terrain for it. I have ordered some trees, part of which still will need to be "winterized" and part of which are pre-winterized. Meanwhile I thought I could do a bit of a trench or something similar, with an attached machine-gun nest... something that either side could use, depending on the scenario.

Here's two wip pics of it, now got to wait for the plaster to dry, then paint and finish with snow effects.

Will need to do few patches of forests as scatter terrain, maybe a cabin or two etc.

C&C welcome as well as ideas and thoughts.

Nice bunker.

I picked up a forest worth of snow trees from Michaels after Xmas - cheap! They are perfect for winter war.

Many thanks for the interest to all of you. The plaster has settled nicely during the night and next step is to drill holes for some trees - I wish to emulate a position that has been prepared in a small knoll, covered by a sparse group of pines.

Hopefully some pics to show tomorrow.

Occasional hails and zero temperatures so far. Still counts as summer.

Here in deep south (read: Helsinki) not even those hails yet, temperatures below zero C during nights though. So unfortunately no reference material outside, I have to do it all based on my memory :D

The top of the mg-nest is fixed in place, much easier this way and if it occupied by a mg team, just need to place the minis off-board for time-being.

It looks quite good with trees in place, tomorrow coating of snow. Will post pics as I get them taken in the daylight.

Glad to hear, the longhaired general was chatting with another Finn who mentioned the snow had come early - obviously that was much further north. We're in Helsinki for her mother's 70th next month. So I might able to drag her chap off to the military museum whilst the girls go to the spa for pampering  :)

@Janners: That sounds like a plan.... it might snow any day now but it won't be the sort that will last the whole winter, more on the sleet side of things at best. How many days you will be in town and in country? Know all the gaming stores already?

Here's a pre-snow piccy:

Well you still have plenty of time to leave the ladies in Helsinki and visit Parola Armour museum or go to Hämeenlinna and visit the mediaval castle and the artillery museum next to it. Early train and you are back before the ladies have time to miss you :)

Trees are from ebay, I ordered first 30 of those pine-like seen in the pic and last week 30 pieces of fir-like trees with snow on already. Twisted wire-trunks so they are quite ok for the price. Of course one could use few taller ones here and there...

Let me know if you need any Helsinki details.
