help with pinning and metal joining
« on: 12 October 2013, 11:11:30 PM »
So not really sure what I am doing on this aspect. Went and bought a pin vice I think at hobby lobby not really sure why the pins it came with dont all fit. Went and got some more bits from a local train store  there also too small. The bits pieces actually fall back in the storage area of the body of the tool.

Pretty clueless on if I got the wrong one or I just really dont know how to use it.

When I open the tool. There is a swappable plastic pieces with two different size openings. One side can take the biggest drill bit and the rest are too small and fall back into the tool..

I can provide pictures if that would help.

My second question is on how to get metal pieces to stick. Again at Hobby Lobby I bought testors cement for metal and wood models. Getting wierd results. It does stick but what I would compare to hot glue bond. it sticks kinds but the bond is weak and easily break. I have tried roughing up the surface area. no Difference.

The testors also leaves a little residue so I have tried super gluing that. Doesn't do any better. Sadly.

any tips or suggestions welcome.

I will break down my answers to make it a bit easier.  Most, not all, pin vises have reversible metal chucks.  If you unscrew the chuck all the way and try to pull the "bit holder" out it should have a different size underneath.  They also usually store another "bit holder" in the handle.  If yours is plastic or does not have a second "bit holder" I cannot help too much.  Another pin vise might be beneficial.  Possibly one like this.

The glue from testors is not the best.  Try cheap superglue.  Once you have the pinhole drilled, drop the superglue in and add the pin.  Let it set.  Then clip the excess off and use it to mark or score where the receiving hole will be.  Drill there and drop some super glue in again and stick the parts together.  My experiance with the testors glue has been poor.  If you do not want to use superglue, then try some two part epoxy resin.  It will get similar results.
Hope that helps.

Lol First off I didnt realize the bottom unscrewed there was another bit holder. in the original packaging there was no directions but there were bits came that wouldnt fit it didnt make any sense. Thanks Ive pretty much avoided using it because the one bit that worked was waay too big. I assumed it was more a Im sure how it works thing more than anything.

Now that I can use my pin vise. It looks exactly like the picture u posted. Pinning shouldn't be a problem. Hopefully that will get the super glue to work. Spending almost any hour holding the pieces together and nothing to show for it, is probably the most annoying thing ever.

Thanks!!!

Glad you got the drill sorted out.  When your bits get dull...replace them!  Nothing is worse than having your fingers cramp from having to push and push and twist a dull bit.

I have found gel or gap-filling super glue best for large parts and for anchoring the first side of the brass pin.  I use liquid ("runny") super glue for small parts.  Some folks also suggest using super glue "kicker" to help make the bond more quickly.

Hope this helps.
