I have had a wonderful time reading through this thread. Really nice stuff and very inspiring! Your ability to paint really bold colours without going too far into the realms of cartoony is fantastic.

funnily that Slaanesh Hero has allways been some a favorite of mine. Great Job on him.

I got my lesser Goblins and was scho
schocked....those Guys are tiny...thats nearly Snotling Sized. I had imagined them to be rather small but not this small. Sadly the packaging i found lacking, most spears bent and one broken but I don`t feel like raising a tantrum with AA because of that.

I feel even more respect for you regarding their paint Job considering their size and I am a little bit lost on their Bases, I want to base everything on 30mm lipped Bases as I love them...but those Guys look rather lost on those :/.

Keep it coming!

They are quite small - I feel like I should have warned you :/ That is also the reason I find the price-hike a bit ridiculous. They are still very nice miniatures, and I certainly got them because I wanted some very small critters, but yeah. A bit teeny.

A suggestion would be to base 2 or 3 on a 30mm base and use them as a sort of swarm/count them as a single goblin, which would look pretty cool I think. That, or go for a smaller base size. I kinda like them on 25mm, as it emphasizes how scrawny they are, but they would propably work equally well, if not better, on 20mm rounds. (Which are sold by Em4 miniatures or Forlorn Hope Games)

Whatever you end up doing, you better post some pic's to these boards  :D

Glad you are enjoying the thread, and thanks for the kind words :) I have a couple more shots with the gobbers in for this update.

I have had a wonderful time reading through this thread. Really nice stuff and very inspiring! Your ability to paint really bold colours without going too far into the realms of cartoony is fantastic.

I always found the desaturated look of post-'90'ies GW painting to be a terrible bore, so I started just painting things in bright reds and here I am  :D Glad to hear that it works out. I think it gives the minis a quite striking presence on the table-top.
(Also pretty amazed that you read through the entire thing: Means a lot to me that people enjoy my ramblings)

Some great stuff in there. Lovely bright colours & shiny metalwork  and I love how you paint goblins.

More goblins are on my to-do list!

Having taken advantage of Alternative-armies recent "free shipping" ploy, I've come into the possession of quite a few vertically challenged ones.

First thing I noticed was that they weren't all in the same scale or style.
Bummer :I
I am not entirely sure how I will deal with that, as I really enjoy the miniatures, but it's very noticeable when they are stood next to each other. I am hoping it will be less obvious when they are painted - we'll see.

Anyways. I hurried to paint up the first of the blokes:

In the city guard, dwarves make up most of the front line fighters, along with the heavily armoured nobles and Men-at-Arms.

I am not entirely sure that I got the colour-scheme right. Not 100% happy with the way it turned out, but on the whole, I think he looks pretty neat. Certainly a fun miniature to paint: I spent way longer painting him than I usually do.

A Dwarf takes the fight to the greenskins, much to the surprise of the would-be ambushers

I especially enjoyed the very characterful face on the miniature, even though the eyes very a bit scewed. I tried out a new, somewhat more dark, mix for the skin - Mixing Vallejo Model Color Medium Fleshtone with an apparantly nameless Vallejo Game Colour reddish fleshtone. This was followed by a wash with Army Painter Strong tone (very close to the glorious Devlan Mud), and then highlighted by adding Privateer Press Midlund Flesh for a couple of layers. Turned out very well, I think.

After dispatching countless lesser goblinoids, a dwarven fighter faces the leader of the enemy warband - A foul warrior of the Dark Gods. Will he prevail?

That's all for now. Lots of thanks for reading and for all of your nice comments!
Cheers

No worries mate, the fault lies with me. I should have asked for some comparison Pics.
I agree, now I find the prize ridiculous as well and probably would not have bought them had I known. I would have prefered to buy some bigger Kev Adams Goblins from EM4, Crooked claw, Hasslefree or Black tree. I do have millions of 25mm Bases /rough guess ;)) but I have fallen in love wih those lipped Bases, tried your suggestion of multibasing but it looks odd...hmm will think. I have put them aside and will get back to them when he initial dissapointment has worn off.

Again a lovely Update, big Fan of those Action shots although I have to admit that I am not a Fan of the Dwarf Sculpt (never would have though I would ever type those words  lol). But you did a great Paintjob on him.

I really need to get some progress in as it look like you are having mighty fun and I am quite jealous, its a nice break from painting huge Armies and there are so many lovely Rules Sets to use ones Lead Pile.

Just a quick post today to show off another painted dwarf:

The problem with goblins is that they multiply so incredibly fast. Some infamous mountain roads need to be scoured on a monthly basis, less the goblins grow too numerous and start endangering the various caravans passing through.

I really need to get some progress in as it look like you are having mighty fun and I am quite jealous, its a nice break from painting huge Armies and there are so many lovely Rules Sets to use ones Lead Pile.

Indeed I am - at a point I realized that I just couldn't be bothered painting armies for *certain* games-systems that I barely even find fun to play. Skirmish-gaming is where its at for me! (Even when I try to do other genres, like sci-fi skirmish or historical/ww2, within a day I find myself painting fantasy miniatures again.  ::) )

I think I saw 25mm lipped bases for sale somewhere. though I can't quite remember. Even though the goblins are small, I will give that they are some nice sculpts. Just ruddy expensive and fiddly!

I usually prefer the more Olley-esque dwarves, but I am just having a load of fun painting these guys! They have a certain grounded "realism" to them that I quite enjoy. Sort of tolkien-esque.

The Little Warrior did paint up in FINE fashion...GREAT WORK!

I always seem to particularly enjoy painting dwarves. There's just something fun about them!

The latest Vertically Challenged One looks like a merry warrior...WONDERFULLY expressive face & a FINE paint job. GREAT WORK once more!

...I agree; i.e., Dwarves, Goblins of various types, & Gnomes are THE MOST enjoyable of minis to paint. The abundance of personality that most mini makers bestow on the Little Guys is the main attraction for moi.

It does help that, through the times, most of my favourite sculpters have produced some amazing dwarves: Bob Olley, Kev Adams, The Perrys and even Mike Owens have a few.

And that is to say nothing of the goblins - An area I have yet to reallly delve into. All in good time.

Today, while I was supposed to work on a paper, I decided to finish one of my languishing terrain-project.
This house has been sat on a shelf for a horrendously long time, so it was only fair that it finally had a coat of paint.

I kinda regret a ladder on the house, epsecially since it is kinda poorly made. But now it's there, and painted, so people can climb onto the rooftof, should they want to.

That's all for now; back to the books with me.

Thanks for reading!

A nice lot of Dwarfs. I don't mind scale/style difference that much myself, as you can reduce those greatly by choosing a coherent paint job.
Also, humans vary roughly between 1.60 and 1.90 meters ( with exceptions ranging from below 1.50 up to over 2.10 meters ). In our 28mm scale would the common average human vary from 2,5cms up to almost 3 cms, again with plausible exceptions from 2,35 cms up to 3,25 cms.
And you can always put some plasticard on the bases to help the really small ones do the SSST ( Sylvester Stallone Shoe Trick ) ;)

That is an OUTSTANDING little creation, AND a FINE addition to your project/collection. I rather like the ladder; re, it adds to the decrepit, rickety look of the shack. BEAUTIFULLY modeled & painted...VERY WELL DONE!

It doesn't have to be a ladder - a few climbing plants will make it look like a nice trellis-work. If it doubles up as a rickety ladder too, then all the better.

I'm in the same boat, Affun...except that my dwarves are sitting on my desk as I take care of my new baby! Maybe in a week or two I'll find some time to get some paint on them. Meanwhile yours are looking excellent!!

That might be an idea. I'll have to look into some way of doing that.
