Hey guys, I've just started work on my new Lord of the Rings solo campaign loosely based on Jason and the Argonauts. Here's a shot of my first two heroes.

Loads more about the background and ideas on my blog: http://therenaissancetroll.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/the-voyage-of-glaurung.html

Interesting idea - I am looking forward to seeing it come to fruition. Will you be using the monsters from the Jason (and/or Odysseus) myth or will you be swapping them out for Middle Earth equivalents? I can see some quite interesting ideas coming from this.

Interesting - though I really doubt that any sane Gondorian would name his ship "Glaurung". The names of evil heroes of the Elder Days might be used as titles or honorary names by minions of the Dark Tower (compare "Gothmog", the steward of Minas Morgul).

However, the concept of this story is really cool. And yes, I can see Denethor doing what you came up with. It's a "statemanly" decision. I'm going to enjoy this.

I agree, however, the hero's name translates to 'violence' and he's not really fitting into Denethor's vision of Minas Tirith so I think its a good ship name for him.

I look forward to seeing this progress. I've been toying with getting into LOTR again but never find the motivation, hopefully this will inspire me.

Thanks for all the comments guys. I must say that I was greatly inspired by Doomhippies' Ithilien campaign, so hopefully my campaign will encourage others just as his has.

As for The Glaurung - he was killed over 6,000 years before the War of the Ring. I assumed that if anyone in Gondor even knew the name, it would just be some distant myth that no one really believed in. It's certainly a debatable point, Tolkien is never really clear about how much the common man knows of the history of Middle-Earth.

Glad to have been of service ;).

I see your point considering the name. And I haven't really thought about it that way. Have to ponder that...

The name kind of bugs me too. As distant as they were, the Gondorians still made a point of using names derived from Elven or Numenorean heritage. The whole idea of being "faithful" to the elves and the Eldar was such a big part of the heritage of Arnor and Gondor in Middle-Earth.

Some similarly ominous names to use might be the Alcarondas, which was the name of Ar-Pharazôn's flagship, or Palarran, another Numenorean ship with a dubious history.

Of course, it's your game, so I'm hardly about to insist on the point  ;)

Well, I fear Glaurung has been in my head too long now to comfortably change it, but I take your points. Perhaps I can work this 'strange name' in the narrative somehow...

Wow! Great-looking project. I also think the Revell viking ship would work really well, although you would probably have to 'waterline' it down to size.

I also initially cocked an eyebrow at the name 'Glaurung' for a Gondorian vessel, but you make a good point about the common folk's understanding of myth in Middle-earth, and anyway all the better for a cursed voyage! Maybe you should paint some eyes on it in honour of ol' Glaurung's fabled powers of obfuscation and persuasion?

Anyway, it's your game and it looks like being a cracker. Keep us posted!

Those are a FINE LOOKING Adventuring Group no matter what game you're planning on using them in. The selection of minis, color choices, & brushwork are OUTSTANDING. VERY WELL DONE!
