When we teach this period I hardly even mention the war, except in context to some other issue.  I dont want to say that it's not worth knowing, but there seems to be an impression that the US was solely turned inward in the early decades, and of course this isnt true.  I think with so many personalities from the Revolution still around, it just falls to the wayside in a sea of notable activity.

That's 'The Other Forgotten not-War' :)

Oh.

There are so many it is hard to keep them straight...

Any sign of response by the Royal Mail yet?

Gracias,

Glenn

I dont think so.

On the flip side, I hope the USPS stays public...  We have TNT, which is private.  They charged me 12 euro to collect a 6 euro tax....  So the 6 euro tax actually cost me 18 euro to pay.  Gotta love private monopolies!

USPS isn't public (as in government run) anymore - neither fish or fowl, see http://usgovinfo.about.com/od/consumerawareness/a/uspsabout.htm  -  but if it was totally private it wouldn't be solvent...  I guess that speaks to the power of 4th class mail and government monopoly on first class mail...

I'd call it a 'Publicly Run Business', the article called it a 'semi-independent Federal agency', I'm not sure if there's a significant difference here.  Of course, while not exactly alike, the Medicare/Private Insurance comparison helps drive the point as well.

But as in the case of this new policy, I hope that in the sense that the Royal Post is still 'Royal' and not 'Bob's Post', the folks in the UK may have a better avenue of redress.  Not merely as customers, but as 'employers' as such as well.  It stinks, because some UK companies run great deals on paint every now and then...  I'm not happy to read this news.

I am never too sure about the effectiveness of petitions, usually a direct letter or email to the people at the top is far more effective.

This page has the email address of the royal mail ceo Moya Green. I am sure she would be really happy to receive a stack of email from disgruntled lead adventurers.

I did as Mystic suggested, ny email and the reply is below. I'll keep you posted on developments.

Paraphrased reply: Ms. Greene apologized for the inconvenience and promised an investigation of the issue.

Subject: Restrictions on Water-based paints, wood varnishes and enamels

Dear Ms Greene

I write to express my concern and dismay at the recently introduced restriction on the posting of Water-based paints, wood varnishes and enamels.

As a model maker I regularly order quantities of water based acrylic paint from UK websites. These are small pots typically containing less than 20ml of paint. The pots are factory sealed and made of robust plastic and I have yet to have one arrive in a damaged condition.

The new restrictions imposed by your organisation mean that I am now not going to be able to order more than 80ml of paint (4 pots) in a single package, however if it were children's craft paint in 150ml bottles I could order 600ml in a single package, seven and a half times as much.  Limiting the number of items makes no sense at all, surely it is the total volume of liquid that is the key factor, not how many pots it comes in.

I believe this new restriction is going to have a significant impact on retailers and their customers, in fact I have already seen warnings such as the one below appearing on paint supplier's websites

Shipping Restriction: We always try to offer a wide range of shipping options to our customers so that they have their choice of service. Unfortunately, changes to Royal Mail's policy means that we are unable to reliably use their service for water-based paints, wood varnishes and enamels that exceed 150ml. Furthermore, no more than four such items can be sent in any one package. If you select an incompatible shipping service your order may be held pending either an extra charge for courier or cancelled and refunded. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

I also believe that it will impact the Royal Mail as they lose business to other alternative couriers and shipping companies who do not have such restrictive regulations.

Is it possible for you to review the restriction and consider removing the limit on the number of items, and apply a more logical restriction to the total volume of liquid in the parcel?

I respectfully await your response.

Regards,

Mark Evans

I'm not holding my breath but it would be encouraging if they looked at a more logical application of their policy.

Have plagiarised Mark's email to Ms Green and sent her my own version. If enough of us send her e-mails we may actually get her, one of her colleagues or their minions to do something sensible.

The fact that you can still send litres of liquor or oil-based paint is what really strikes me as absurd about this.

Why will Royal Mail not ship pants any more? What if they are labeled as trousers?
