A good place to buy nice dice?
« on: 05 December 2013, 04:41:30 AM »
So, I'm looking for some new dice. Ideally, I'd like to pick up five each of D6s, D8s, D10's, and D12's, in two colours, for a total of 40 dice (all numbered, not dotted).

Went on down to the local gaming store, where they had some sets of 1 D4, D6, D8, D10, D12 and D20, for $6 each for a crappy ugly set or $10 each for a nicer set. Buying an ugly set would cost me $60 and nice set would be an absurd $100!!! They also had some ugly bargain bin loose dice for 75 cents each, but those are all mismatched so never mind getting two sets of five in the types I needed.

Holy Christmas biscuits, that's just about highway robbery.

Anyone suggest any online alternates for me to get what I need?

Roger that!

I recently had multiple orders from them, quick to the states, nice dice, reasonable prices (it can go from cheap to "reidiculous" but it's all depending on what you want,) for what I wanted, nice process.

Gracias,

Glenn

EM4/dic and games do a great range of dice and quantities/colours to suit what you're after.

I think..

$100 for dice!

maybe its the code word they use for drugs?

Actually it's spelled D-ICE... sounds more like a drug, no? But Valkyrie is the one that sounds the best.

Concerning manufacturers, Chessex may still be my favourite, while Koplow isn't bad either. Both are US-based. Unfortunately Chessex's order system is embarrassingly primitive (asking to send credit card details by plain e-mail in 2013, seriously?) while Koplow doesn't even sell to private customers. However, most major online RPG stores in North America should carry single dice in every imaginable colour and finish.

Chessex's plain, opaque (non-D6) polyhedra are 55c each, while fancier ones are about $1.40.

Note that some textures may look neat in studio promo pics but in the dim dungeons of gaming they can be difficult to read. If in doubt, pick the simpler design with good contrast. I prefer frosted. The only risk is that they look literally delicious...

Yeah, these are all turning out to be expensive.

I'm actually amazed that this market literally has no low end! Sure, there are plenty of fancy-pants boutique manufacturers, but where are the goons with poorly-weighted cheap overseas-made ten-cent dice?

A lot of these buggers also won't sell dice individually. Why pay $4-$13 for a set of polyhedrals, when I only need 4 of them? I'm really hoping there's alternatives to the Chessex 55-cent dice, which are frankly ugly and with a very small selection. The rest of their line are all $1.40/die which would run me close to $60... plus shipping. Even the "cheap" dice would be $25 + shipping, which still feels wrong... if I have to put up with ugly dice (not the end of the world, I'm sure), paying that much for them seems silly. They list only ground UP as the shipping option, so I'd be looking at at least $20 for shipping, probably more.

So far the cheapest I've found with shipping comes to about $40, but that's for the really cheap ugly dice (55 cents/die). Paying $40 for ugly dice sure feels sour. I'm not sure I'd pay even that much for NICE dice.

If I do have to buy ugly dice, fine, but then I'd as soon prefer to just buy cheapie junk, keep it to like $15, $20 or so. Funny enough it seems like there are no mass-slingers of cheap junk (at least for polyhedrals)! Every dice manufacturer I've found is an expensive boutique seller.

I'm about ready to give up for a while.

Well, for a mid-range solution there's translucent, which is quite pretty and about 80c each.

The bitter truth is that unless a die can be used for Craps or Monopoly, it's a specialised geek product and won't be mass-produced in a huge scale in Hong Kong. I've seen bulk D10s occasionally online and in department stores, even bought them for bargain prices for Carnevale, but other shapes are rare. Or the expectation is that a role-player is happy with a 7-dice tube or a few singles in lucky colours from those assortment bins. Who could possibly need D12s in bulk quantities?

I don't know how retailer/shipping options work in Outer Canuckistan. I'm lucky enough to visit semi-regularly major shows where Chessex/Koplow have their booths with full selection. Dangerous places. I already have more dice than one could ever need but there's always something more shiny out there...or a new game which uses lots of strange dice.

(Obviously it's questionable whether it's cheap to pay >200e for plane tickets to buy dice but I digress.)

Years ago I bought some Chessex from Sci-fi Genre/Atomic Empire, who had good selection, discounts and affordable shipping. No guarantee that any of those would apply today.

Of course, you could also ask a local retailer. Maybe they can order unusual stuff through their distribution channels. It probably won't be any cheaper than online list prices but at least you should be able to skip most of shipping costs.

Brigade Models have a set for £ 1,25 or about $2 Unfortunately only in black and maybe shipping will prove to be too expensive as well. Stull, maybe half a solution for your quest ?

thats all quite astounding.

Is there not some sort of D&D dice rolling app and you just get people to shake their phones about a bit. If not there bloody well should be.

here ya go bro

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rambutan.dice&hl=en

free and has fancy ass dice.

its the way of the future n all that.

A die-rolling app is easily the cheapest option. I'd really prefer to have actual dice if I could because it's Pulp Alley, so it'll be quite a bit easier for folks to do the dice matching/cancelling for combat on the table with physical dice to place. Plus some of my buddies here have kids that may be interested in playing and kids love rolling real dice ;)

Wish the dice folks went to nerd shows/cons here! That setup dolmot showed looks great.

One thing that we've found that is rather helpful for younger or newer players is to use different colors for the different sided dice. For example, all my d6's are white, all my d8's are black, and my d10's are red.

For folks that are not familiar with the dice, this can prevent a rogue d10 slipping into a d8's roll. And it's easy to say "roll 3 of the black dice" when someone isn't sure how to tell the d8's when the d10's.

Also, just depending on what you're planning you can usually get by just fine with fewer d12's. Personally, we can go through a dozen or so games and never roll d12's.
