What is most impressive is that you seem to have been doing all this in my conservatory, without me noticing  :D

It was a touch hard working around the washing, hopefully the paint and plaster will come out in the next wash  :D

The last update before Salute – 16 buildings, 9 terrain boards and 1 bridge completed, the Mud and Blood cards and big labels produced and printed, player briefings ready with 24 hours to spare.

There’s a number of unforced errors in here I should fix (check the wine merchant's door!) and the buildings need more clutter to make them a little more lived in but hopefully the overall effect on the day should be ok.  Perhaps I'll see some of you there and there'll be photos of the full set up on the day (Fred's conservatory wasn't big enough to get the whole lot into one photograph)for those who can't make Salute.

Normandie  Ferme

Le Chateau du Comte d’Ardup (The Big House)

Ferme de confort froid  (Cold Comfort Farm)

La ligne de marchands de vin (the wine merchants row)
Complete with a statue of the local Comte and a republican dog.

It was you was it! I had been blaming the kids getting messy at school.

Your buildings are looking great - the flowers and other little touches around the bottoms of the walls really help make them look more natural. Have a great game at Salute.

A really great Salute, spent so much time talking to various punters while running the game that my voice has now virtually disappeared  :-X

My photos look rather poor, I'll need to sort them out tomorrow, but in the meantime a Monsieur Daguerre passed on one of his snaps:

Good to meet up with you Geoffb, and with many others.  It would be a good social event if it wasn't for all these messy wargames  :)

Salute Update

The setup:

The game requires the ‘Orrible ‘Un to advance from the chateau in the foreground to sieze the bridge in the town of Dampf, while the ‘Brave Little Belgians’ advance from the road on the right, on the opposite bank of the canal try to do the same thing.  Shooting across the canal is always at long range so the players have to balance the desire to slow down the opposition with high risk shots with the desire to advance into the town but take casualties along the way:

My collaborator on this is Baron Hardup, he provided the figures and the pissoir – possibly the most photographed item on the board.

He also provided the Taube, a little aerial recce for the random artillery bombardments:

Second most photographed item, the dog peeing on the statue:

The Germans had been very slow to assault the town but finally worked out what their Uhlans were for and charged them straight down the road into the town:

Unfortunately too late to prevent Sgt Fantome, who had commandeered a scout car, put his men in and with a few boxes of dynamite on the back seat drove into Dampf without being fired at once by the Germans and succeeded in blowing the bridge!

Another member of our team had a Grandfather, Ernest Wilson, who won the DCM for courage under fire in WW1 – he had the medals and other items framed for the game and the citation reads:
‘Sergeant Ernest Wilson, D.C.M.: " When all the company officers had become casualties, he collected his men together and assisted to garrison a very important strong point, and succeeded in beating off repeated German counter-attacks. Later, when surrounded and overwhelmed by great numbers, he and his garrison were driven from their positions, whereupon he rallied his men, attached them to another unit, and helped to recapture the position." ‘

That is a magnificent table!

I'm definitely going to take inspiration from this and adapt "Dampf" lightly for my Russian Civil War figures and scenery - the only bridge across some random canal or stream somewhere on the flanks of one of the many advances or retreats across Russia during that time. Probably make it my 2015 convention game, as the more I think of it the more Dampf is an ideal convention game - funnelled movement, definite clearcut choices for the players to make, etc.
