The Crypt of the Damned awakened - Eye Beast by Reaper
« on: 26 January 2014, 09:53:14 AM »
Hiho,

I already mentioned in the intro section that I have a pile of Reaper Bones to paint, but why would I paint all those heroes and monsters if there would not be a greater good? While we have a nice DnD group going and some of the minis come in handy, my real goal in the long run is to have a modular Dungeon interior with al kinds of different environments and filled to the top with beautiful miniatures.

I already finished a selection of tiles and wall segments, but I am still looking for a good solution to make setup easier.

So far a typical gaming setup looks as follows:

I now think of getting away from the idea to have the walls separate and make fully assembled rooms on a 8x8 tiles modul. This way I could combine them anyway I like and could also let some parts of a wall segment go over to the floor (e. g. a root of a tree or some protruding wall adornments) In the 8x8 modul I could have all kinds of rooms or even a large modul of 16x8 or 16x16.

The idea is to have fully sculpted walls instead of the current styrofoam ones. This is an example of a beer cellar segment I recently finished:

It would be cool if some of you had some ideas for wall segments, general design of the modular dungeon and comments on my progress so far.

Naturally I also painted some monsters and heroes up. First a horde of Wargames Factory skeletons:

It follows Freja Fangbreaker a model from the Bones line:

The most recent addition to the finished miniatures is Anirion, again a Bones miniature:

A lot more pictures, reviews of the two miniatures and tutorials for the beer cellar and Anirions Base can be found on my Blog http://daggerandbrush.wordpress.com/

There are more heroes in the pipeline and I hope to get to some monsters soon. I also hope to be able to decide how I proceed with the modular tiles, but maybe some of you guys can help with that.

Gorgeous stuff so far.  I'm impressed you actually managed to assemble some of those Wargames Factory skeletons (I have the sprues and they look super finnicky so I never bothered).  I'm just beginning to dabble in my own dungeon project, so I'll be watching this with interest.  Without going the DF route, I think larger pre-set sections are definitely a good idea.  8x8 is big enough to get some good variety.

Lovely photos.  I was looking at the Bones stuff and have ordered a couple of minor figures.  Curious to see what you get from them.  Keep up the great work.

Fantastic looking stuff! I'm also impressed by your work on those Wargames Factory skeletons, I did try to assemble some, but gave up in frustration after gluing one together.

Beautiful stuff, I like the trees and bits of terrain.   I also really like the carved brickwork and all the accessories.  Those grates are cool too.  Thanks for the great pictures.. .

Really well done !

I made my own dungeon set (not as good looking), and I can say that it's a HUGE project to complete. Especially with such detailled pieces.

Love your dungeon and your minis! I'm especially found of the skeletons, I have som Otherworld ones myself that are great but pricey, the Wargames Factory skellies seem like a really good alternative if you need a horde.

Thank you all for your responses. I had a good look through all the Dungeon projects on the forum and got some good ideas. I think I'll go for the integrated walls, but I am still not quite certain how high to make them, as I don't want the big miniatures to not fit. Too low doesnt look right, so Imight need to experiment.

The Wargames Factory Skeletons are VERY fiddly to assemble, but if that is done they look very nice and so far I had no breakage during our gaming sessions. It seems the retooled the Skeleton sprue, so they are now slightly less fragile around the leg area.

The trees are all handmade using wire, permafiller and MiniNatur products. I prepare a step-by-step tutorial for my blog at the moment, but it might be some time until I get around finishing it.

I guess later today I make an effort to start a protype 8x8 modul and see how it goes.

Hiho,

last week I did some experiments with pressure molds to make it easier for me to produce the wall segments for my dungeon:

I think they turned out nice, but I also tried some other techniques using styrofoam and free hand sculpting with Original Sculpey, all leading to some quite different effects:

I also made a detailed Tutorial outlining each step to make such pieces and the materials required. Definitely cheaper and less stressful than Resin casts using silicon rubber.

Heck they all look good - can't wait to see what you do with them.
