Asian/African animals in 15 mm
« on: January 28, 2014, 03:04:32 AM »
Specifically I am looking at getting Gorillas, Orangutans, Chimpanzees, Monkeys/Lemurs, Lions, Tigers, Bears, Wild Boars, Crocodiles, Hippopotami, Rhinos, Vultures, Eagles, Hyenas, Wild Dogs, and/or  Elephants for a parallel project.

Sources in 15 mm?

Gracias,

Glenn

Glenn,

May I say you've come to the right place to get this information fulfilled - and to the right person to be your guide through the world of 15 mm animals.

Gorillas - see here: https://www.bluemoonmanufacturing.com/view_product.php?product=15DDA-121
a bit ponderous for my tastes but the only ones made in this scale I know of.  You can also try zoo gift shops, I've found some very workable ones (no pictures, sorry), also bead shops sometimes have useful bits.
Orangutans - no known options, if found please advise
Chimpanzees - two options, HO set from Preiser but they run on the smaller side or the HATT (old Airfix) Jungle Adventure set, but only one per set (but other useful items, see further on)
Monkeys/Lemurs - not lemur like but only know option is Irregular, primate on tree trunk - with tail, see here: http://www.irregularminiatures.co.uk/indexes/15mmindex.htm
Lions - as with several other items see above Irregular Link (IL), also go here: http://www.splinteredlightminis.com/15anandcr.html, also try bead stores for younger lions, I use the tiger from Irregular for female lions and the other for male
Tigers - see IL above, bead stores again and http://www.peterpig.co.uk/VCchaarcyters.jpg
Bear - check Splintered Light link above
Wild Boars - ditto, also Irregular (more African warthog - and I can pat myself on the back, one of my requests!)
Crocodiles - Irregular, the HATT jungle set, and http://www.peterpig.co.uk/AKcrocodiles.jpg
Hippopotami - Irregular - another one of my requests
Rhinos - ditto
Vultures - http://www.spanglefish.com/mickyarrowminiatures/index.asp?pageid=192885  Not one hundred percent that is the right page but Mick Yarrow does make vultures - need to order some, also check other possibly useful options
Eagles - not real sure, but I think these are out there somewhere (???)
Hyenas - yea, me, another Irregular request
Wild Dogs - I wish, if you find them, let me know
Elephants - Irregular again (not my request) but they have both African and Indian now - with pictures.

And if you go down the domestic road of beasts in 15 mm two other sources (Irregular being a very good starting point) are Museum Miniatures and Baueda, the latter providing herds with multiple poses.  I'm sure there are others out there to be discovered (or that I've forgotten about).  It is a far cry from when I started such a search 15 or 20 years ago.

One other link to provide: http://steeplechasingzebras.blogspot.com/p/zoologicals.html   That leads to the "Zoological" page on my own blog and has several photographs of my own animal herds for Africa, or at least those that are painted.  Not great painting but good enough to keep me happy.  By the way, the Irregular pronghorn antelope can be used to paint up credible African antelope/gazelle type creatures.

Now, as payment for such exemplary service you can track down and send to me two sets of Frontier Cowboys, the ones with ropes lassoing - in 15 mm!   lol

Hope that helps and let us know what other goodies you find out there in your searches.  Toy stores, knick knack stores, even gem shows sometimes offer up fun surprises.  Oh, and check your local general hobby shop for a spin rack filled with little rubber animals (from Eco out of China, I think - 144 to a container!) - a variety of useful finds there, too.

Good luck.

Meant to include this in the earlier post but had other distractions:

http://www.musketminiatures.com/cgi-bin/catalog_cart.cgi?code=HO70&d=Wild%20Animals&s=HO

There are a variety of animals on offer from this source in HO scale, a bit bigger than 15 mm but some items are readily useful and others are marginal - but it is a source for more animals, wild and domestic.  And really nice folks, met them years ago at a national show and was able to buy directly from them father and son, though son has branched out on his own since then.

Fifteens Away - 15mm.co.uk make 15mm Apes - http://www.15mm.co.uk/552_Ape.htm

I have used 10mm and 6mm fantasy critters in the past. My eagles and bear are from the GW 'Battle of Five Armies' set available a few years ago, my wolves are 10mm fantasy models from Copplestone Castings and I plan on using Pendraken's 10mm Vultures for my African project (I just hope it's not too big).

All the best,

Barry

Thanks to all for those leads (pun not intended) and if I find any elusive sources I will post for others use,

Gracias,

Glenn
