Daemonscape/ GZG56 Dropship
« on: 26 April 2014, 01:00:51 PM »

Painting vehicles is waaay outside my comfort zone, but I decided that I needed a shuttle for my narrative driven skirmish games. I took a bit of time over Easter to get it painted and while it didnt really turn out as well as I had hoped, its good enough for my purposes.

I was aiming for a reasonably quickly achieved "workhorse" affair: a heavily used and abused, Transit van sort of finish reminiscent of the Serenity (from "Firefly").  It ended up being too dark overall although it does remind me a lot of an old dropship toy kitbash that I loved from White Dwarf 112 back in 1989, so its not all bad.

Its quite a substantial model, a fair bit bigger than the Rhino APC shown for example.

I particularly like the hinged rear door.  It suggests all sorts of fun scenario hooks to me :)

The blog post about the slightly unsatisfying painting process is HERE for anyone interested.

Y'know, this is the very first time I've seen this thing outside of a GZG catalogue.  lol Rather nice work, although I'll agree that the large, flat surfaces would make it a challenge and maybe not to modern tastes.

You have done a very nice job on that :).

You could have really gone to town by weathering it etc but I don't think that the kit would have suited it... the scheme you have gone for suits it and shows off the limited details nicely.

Great job on a good model   8)

The Daemonscape catalogue pictures really don't do their range justice - there's a lot of really nice stuff in there.

You are to hard on yourself. I think you have done a cracking job with this. I imediately thought, that is a great "not"- Serenity. Before scrolling and seeing that what was you were aiming at.

Beautiful! The paint-job gives it a great "real world" look which suits it perfectly, I think. Dark grey/metallic was definitely the way to go, rather than something bright and colourful. It's a great size too - I'm always on the lookout for drop ships for 28mm, and this one's perfect. I'm going to have to look into getting one I think. Lovely job! Your collection of alien flora is the perfect backdrop for it too.

Brilliant. I was on the fence about this for my Colonial Marines since I use the Daemonscape scout cars as APCs. I'll definitely get one now as soon as it's available again. (I have a Daemonscape order on the way to me as we speak).

Thanks very much for all the positive feedback folks.  This one had me in more canvas slashing mood than usual - so much so that I wasnt going to bother posting photos here, but I am glad that I did now :)

The Daemonscape catalogue pictures really don't do their range justice - there's a lot of really nice stuff in there.

Of note too is that the Daemonscape castings that I have received have been of high quality.  Obviously a certain amount of preparatory work is part and parcel of things, but its nice not to have hours of tedious, messy work work to get the stuff ready all the same.

I recognised the toy in White Dwarf back when I was thirteen, but it was only today when I was writing the post that I got the details of the toy name and manufacturer (MB Starbird Avenger).  It pleased me to see images of the original old toy, sentimental old codger that I have become ;)

That is excellent. It really does sit nicely among your death world jungle terrain. Nice job on the rhino too. Like the wooden repair job. :D
