Looking for advice on building fire escapes
« on: 21 July 2014, 05:39:45 PM »
I've decided to take the plunge and build a few city buildings for a superhero game. I'm going for an Arkham City look, and I want to add some realistic detailing, such as fire escapes, and can't seem to find the ideal materials to use.

I reckon the basic flooring should be a mesh/grill sheet - plastic would be ideal, but aluminium mesh at a pinch.
Then some plastic H columns to create a frame
And finally some narrow scale ladders/steps (I'm sure I once saw some plastic scale steps, made at a 45-degree angle)

Can anyone recommend where to find these materials in the UK/Europe? Or suggest alternative methods/materials?

Many thanks in advance!

If you don't HAVE to scratch-build your own ones, you coud always look at model railway kits, I'm sure there are plastic fire escapes available somewhere in 28mm scale.

H-columns, stairs, and ladders in various sizes should be available at model railway stores - Plastruct and Evergreen Plastics both do a wide range of things like this.

No idea where to look for UK/Europe sourcing, though, I'm on the wrong side of the world for that!

You could always use the brass etch method although if you don't have access to a drafting program it might prove a tad difficult as I believe most etching companies no longer accept hand drawn drawings (I could be wrong on this though).

There seem to be an increasing number of companies doing laser-cut MDF stuff of late. It could be worth you while to look at someone like Warbases; IIRC they are happy to look into doing stuff to order for people as they can then add it to their catalogue.

The evergreen range: http://www.evergreenscalemodels.com/

UK stockist: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Arcane-Scenery-and-Models/EVERGREEN-PLASTICS-/_i.html?_fsub=1683562013

I swear I saw someone did or was about to do a kit for this in mdf... racking my brain to remember who though.  ???
