I feel the same way. As crisp and technically precise as a lot of modern miniatures are, so many don't have the character that these old models do. It's one of the reasons I've been into old Warzone models despite their sometimes even sillier levels of chunk.
I feel that if GW were to redo the officers/men of station in the last few pictures now, they'd be sharp and loaded with detail, but with completely neutral expressions. Meanwhile, the older (or at least older in spirit) models have stories to tell:
- The larger noble looks like he'd rather be at home with wine, women, food, and song.
- The tech to his right looks like he's having to deal with yet another inane request from the nobility, when he'd rather be working on his own projects.
- The navigator looks like he'd much rather be back on his ship rather than on this industrial planet, but sometimes his job requires dealing with narrow-minded surfacers.
Totally want to go play toy soldiers at Axiom's house. I'd be happy just setting up scenes and taking pictures
