I saw a film called Utu in the mid-late 80's on VHS video.
Is this the same one?

That's the one. It was released in the UK at least - I remember checking the price on Amazon. Didn't buy it at the time but I'm going to have another look now you've reminded me.
"Would I give you a loaded gun?" Chop. "Of course I would"

Great film.

yes that's it but it has been remastered and I seem to remember the soundtrack was a bit ropey hence my wanting to know if it had been re mastered
and maybe on blu ray even?
It appears to be available on youtube here?

Utu received an extensive overhaul last year and the newly restored version has been shown theatrically in NZ and OZ over the past twelve months. There's an FB page and a public FB group for those who wish to be kept up to date on such presentations :

By the way, the redux version is more than just a restoration : Geoff Murphy used the opportunity to re-edit his movie and trim a few scenes he deemed irrelevant or unnecessary. This move has produced the fourth cut of the film, the first being the 118 min original NZ version, the second the cut 104 American release print and the third the 107 min European edition which radically altered the movie's chronology and told the story in flashback mode with Te Wheke's trial providing the narrative thread.

There have been rumours of a BD/DVD release for the redux version for a while now, though no specifics have filtered so far. Heaven knows we need a decent home video release of Utu, though : despite its claim to being an 'unrated director's cut', the old US Kino DVD is the cut American version, with fairly poor picture quality and sound. The Australian DVD offers Murphy's original cut, but isn't 16x9 anamorphic (this is the disc available from Amazon.co.uk for £ 17.99 though beware as it is a region 4 import). A proper Blu-Ray release of Utu would be a day one purchase for me.

Great Haka; but the impact would be far greater if the previous 40 seconds were also included: -where the Maori sergeant is putting the recruits through European drill (which, from their body language, they see as a pointless exercise in the bush).

Great movie. Got it on VHS, and still got a VHS machine for the sole purpose of playing it. :D
