Hi,
I don't want exactly to indulge, but since my younger years I've studied about the participation of Garibaldine contingents in the Turkish-Greek war of 1897, the Insurgence of Creta, 1897 and even the Balcan Wars of 1912. If I don't hijack the thread, I would ask kind permission to be as brief as possible and post a few words and pictures about these issues.

Here is Riccioti Garibaldi, fourth son of Giuseppe, who fought alongside the Greek army against the Turks in 1897

Garibaldines took part in the Greek-Turkish War, 1897 and fought especially at the battle of Domokos, where they were distinguished. One of our greatest national poets, Kostis Palamas, has devoted hymns to these Philellenes in some of his poems.

As you see in one of the pictures, as there was a good number of Italian volunteers and there was a shortage of uniforms, some volunteers are half-dressed in Garibaldian attire.
Maybe a source of inspiration?

Garibaldians in Cretan Insurgence

La Tribuna Illustrate Della Domenica 11th April 1897

For the record; While there were rumours that a small number of ‘Garabaldians’ had gone to Crete to fight for the Cretan Christians, there is no apparent record of them taking part in any action, let alone getting involved in the conflict under an Italian flag.

...but this is how the newspaper depicts them...
