Reading Recommendations: Alamo
« on: October 15, 2014, 04:30:54 PM »
Guys,

Can anyone recommend some reading for the Alamo or even the Texas War of Independence as a whole?

We could maybe start collating a sticky of suggestions for various periods that can be a point of reference  :D

Where shall I start: :D

The first two would be my bibles for the whole war and the Alamo seige. If you only get two books get these:

Texian Iliad by S Harding. An excellent study of the war with illustrations by Gary Zaboly.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Texian-Iliad-Military-Revolution-1835-1836/dp/0292731027

Blood of Noble Men. The Alamo seige by Alan Huffiness. Invaluable a must have, day by day account of the seige with first hand quotations from both sides. great illustrations by Gary Zaboly.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Blood-Noble-Men-Alamo-Battle/dp/1571688927/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1413387482&sr=8-1&keywords=blood+of+noble+men

The illustrated Alamo by Mark Lemon. A beautiful model of the Alamo with scale plans ideal for scratchbuilding, but little info on the seige.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Illustrated-Alamo-1836-Photographic/dp/1933337184/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1413387601&sr=8-1&keywords=the+alamo+mark+lemon

13 Days to Glory - Lon Tinkle. Written in the 1950s, so some of the history is fanciful and dated but a good read none the less.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/13-Days-Glory-Southwest-Landmark/dp/0890967075/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1413387671&sr=8-5&keywords=alamo+13+days

Tha Alamo and beyond. A collectors Journey by Phil Collins (Yes THE Phil Collins) He has amassed a superb collection of artefacts from the Alamo and the Texas revolution. More excellent illustrations by Gary Zaboly and lovely photographs of weapons, unfiroms etc.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Alamo-Beyond-Collectors-Journey/dp/1933337508/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1413387903&sr=8-1&keywords=alamo+phil+collins

An alter for their sons by Gary Zaboly. A companion book to Phil Collins. More great illustrations:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Altar-Their-Sons-Revolution-Contemporary/dp/193333746X/ref=pd_cp_b_1

Three Roads to the Alamo by William Davis. A good study of the lives of Crockett, Travis and Bowie and the seige.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Three-Roads-Alamo-William-Davis-ebook/dp/B000FC1POI/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1413388050&sr=8-1-fkmr1&keywords=thirteen+the+alamo+book+of+days

Osprey do two books both good but painting guides dubious on the Mexican army.

That lot should keep you going, but I certainly recommend the first two. If you want anymore I'll look on the bookshelf at home as no doubt I will have forgotten some  :)

Google Gary Zaboly Alamo pictures and you will see what I mean. ;D
