100YW reading recommendations/resources
« on: May 12, 2023, 11:38:47 PM »
Morning afternoon & evening all
I just wondered if any of you have recommendations for reading/viewing re 100YW
It may well be my next project and would be grateful for recommendations for general histories, heraldry sources, web resources etc
I've listened to some great historical fiction audiobooks that have set me down the path and at the moment I'm tossing up whether to go 10YW or WOTR
many thanks

Verneuil 1424 by Richard Wadge. A good read covering the oft-over looked Franco-Scots cooperation in the Lancastrian phase. Rather than yet another book on Agincourt.

Richard Wadge's book is heavily based on Mike Jones. "Toward a Future of Courage" essay which I have a copy of. I would have to get permission to pass it onto you but I'm perfectly happy to try?

Jonathan Sumption’s 4 volume ‘The Hundred Years War’ is excellent for both overview and detail although - health warning - it will take over your life :)

‘The Road to Crecy’ by Marilyn Livingston and Morgen Witzel was also excellent for the 1346 campaign.

I usually reference Sumption but no one ever seems to read him! His four volumes are by far the deepest dive into the HYW available nowadays.

I'd stick anything by Anne Curry in there too.

‘The Road to Crecy’ by Marilyn Livingston

Is another great suggestion.

Is this the same as 'The Battle of Verneuil (17 August 1424): Towards a History of Courage' in War in History, Vol. 9, No. 4 (November 2002), pp. 375-411? Or a development of that argument?
If so the essay is available to read only (no download unless you pay) on JSTOR - (just Google that title and it should show up. You will need to register if you aren't already on JSTOR).

No, in fact I think the book is a simplified version of the essay. For instance, Mike Jones puts a heavy emphasis on the importance of pageantry and it's vital symbolic importance prior to the battle. The book does not.

I was sent the essay via Dave Lanchester at the Lance and Longbow Society with special permission from Mike Jones in 2010-2011 for a demo game Simon Chick and I put on at Salute.

Pics of the game are here if anyone is interested:

That's dedication. I'm going to be at Partizan so I can discuss HYW literature with you over a cuppa if you fancy?

Cool.  :) :)

We can pick a time nearer the day. It's a train down for me and I'm not sure when I'm going to be arriving.
