Encounter Markers and a Statue
« on: 27 August 2008, 04:21:49 AM »
I did these at about the same time as the small gorilla tribe I posted awhile back. But haven't got around to posting them yet. They're Heroclix figures rebased on the small sized D&D minis puck bases. I plan on using them as encounter markers for lostworld style games. As you probably know, where you find bored apes adventure is sure to be.

And a Dreamblade figure wrestled off of it's base to be a statue. I've got another one, and need to do the same to it.

Excellent. I like the way you painted the aged bronze. Any hint how you've done it?

That statue looks great

I've been looking with interest at Dreamblade stuff on eBay for some time but have never got round to buying any.
Roughly what scale/size are the pieces?

Wonderful job!
How did you get the Dreamblade fig off it's base? And is it? Dreamblades have square bases.
Anyway, I have several, and credit to the manufacturer, nothing short of a nuclear bomb will remove them from the base!

I have done a few aged copper or bronze models. While mine don't look as cool the technique should be similar:

First paint the model with gold (preferrebly a bright gold hue). Wash the model with very thinned down green or aquamarine.  Make sure not to make it look too regualr. After that pick out some details with a silver/gold mix.

At least that's how paint these models. Any other ideas?

"How did you get the Dreamblade fig off it's base? And is it?"

Dreamblade bases come in two pieces, the colored plastic, and the black square that are part of the figures. It's still got the black base which has "feet" on the corneres which I figured would work good on a statue. As for getting it off... sprue cutters, a needle nose plier, and a bit of time. :) There are some that I'm just puttying over to look like stonework, at least most of the figures I want off of the bases have thin connecting places. :)

"Roughly what scale/size are the pieces?"

If you have a head for estimating sizes, the outer bases are just under 40mm. Almost all of the human figures are 40mm, and the average figure (all, not just humans) is between 35mm and 50mm tall. And there are some that are bigger than that. If you have a particular one in mind I might be able to measure it for you. Though I don't really have anywhere close to a complete set.

"Any hint how you've done it?"

I started off with a blue-green color from Americana called Bluegrass Green, then heavily drybrushed a mix of that and white to make a kind of mint color. Then another heavy drybrush of bronze, then a light one of silver getting in especially large flat surfaces that might get alot of wear. Like on the edges and the head.

Most of the rest of it is going back and doing thin green washes, and bronze and silver dry brushes to fine tune the look. There were places where the metallic had gotten too much in the grooves, so i mixed up some white/green and worked a little in the cracks wiping it off the surface detail with my finger. I also painted the green into deeper areas like the plates in the rear, between leg sections, and under the shell to add more definition. I also darkened the eyes with watered down black.

Maybe I'll do a step by step for the next one when I find it again.

Thanks for your comments.
