Yes, the giant works best if you use the ranged strike with a club or a boulder as your main attack. You'll be doing d6 damage against most enemies and rolling a d4 against behemoths and other monstrous creatures. You could go on quite the little rampage with just 6 command points. Keep in mind as well that if you stay at range with your giant that you get more value out of its terror trait. It makes your opponent have to either spend valuable command points to engage you or take a risk and roll the dice.
Like Vermis said, you can always use the behemoth profile mixed with various traits and abilities to produce all manner of creatures. This will let you customize the monster to your liking. This option is also great if you want to create an army that features multiple giants or dragons.
